Sorry for the long delay guys, getting hammered with work. I will do my best to update tonight. Morganm, yes it's a wash.

Were you very deliberate about where you put the wash or just covered the whole figure with it and let it pool where it may?

Did you hold the figure upside down so the wash stayed more in the folds and lines in the armor?

Do you remember the recepie you used for that wash? And if you use some sort of gunk what was the recipie for that?

I can't speak for demonelf, but I use GW Badab black wash and apply it directly to the areas I want to wash and hold it so the wash runs flush with the area I want lined. It works pretty well....You can also (I also use this method, more and more lately). Apply the wash directly to the freshly white primed miniature liberally and let it pool into the recesses, then when you lay down your basecoat leave a thin line of black where you want the lines to show. Again these are my methods and demonelf's line work looks much much better than anything I have achieved yet lol.

Sorry for the short reply morganm, I was in a hurry. I have gotten a lot of questions about my wash, so here goes. I prime in Tamiya fine surface white, and let it dry for about a half hour. The wash is a pretty imprecise mixture. The only definite thing is that I use one drop of brown liner. Add maybe a few drops of water, and a drop or two of future floor polish. You may have to add more water and a bit more polish, just keep going until it reaches a thick wash consistency. Then take a big brush (bascoat size) and apply it to irregular areas, like scales, plates, etc. Shick most of it off with a clean brush and let it sit. DO NOT hairdry it. This can make the polish dry sticky and shiny. No holding it upside down, just a straight wash.

Now on to the update! I did his stomach in gold, and really like how it came out. Any ideas for the base and color ideas are welcome!

I really like the color scheme and how this mini is turning out. Even something as simple as breaking up the gold armor with a purple band there on the chest really makes it stand out to me. I think you need to add "something" to the base...maybe a tentacle coming up from the well/stairs he's standing in front of? Something to help add to the scene, flesh out why he's there, what he's doing, but not distract from the mini itself. Can't wait to see this one finished.

Do you use glazing to get such smooth blending?

If so then how many times did you glaze the sword to smooth out the transition from light grey, grey, to the purple/red?

If so then did you do all of the layers and glaze afterward? Or did you lay down layers, glaze, lay down more layers, glaze, etc?

I have to agree with Zinzig, that color choice and placement makes for excellent visual interest. And he does look lonely on that base... He is in a very dynamic either 'guarding' or 'guarding-and-about-to-smack-something pose' (seems to me); something to guard and/or smack (but just a hint so as not to take away from the main model) would be good.

A little late now, but even a shadow on the ground suggesting there is something big and nasty there would be cool...

Thanks for all the comments, questions, and suggestions!

Zinzig: thanks for the compliments, I'm really enjoying painting the metal on this fig. The detail is so crisp that it makes it easy and enjoyable. As for the base, I totally agree with you. A tentacle is a good idea, I'm not much with Green Stuff but I suppose I could wangle it. I need to deliberate on this for a while, it has to be scenic but not overpowering....

wyrmgear: That's a good suggestion too! A shadow might work.... but then again that would imply sourcd lighting on the whole front of the mini, which I can't do.... I think it needs something tangible. Again, I really have to think on this.

morganm: The sword was highlighted normally, and I glazed once. Really I  find the key to smooth blends is the right  consistency of paint, a bit thicker than a wash. This needs to be painted in the correct direction: IE if you're adding highlights your brushstrokes should go toward the brghtest highlight, and awat from the midtone. I only glaze when there's a noticable rough patch.

Thanks again, update later!
