Mercius
Anytime. I hope the NMM goes well, I am pretty dedicated to trying to get it right this time...I figure if I don't get it though I can always redo it using metallics before I put on too many coats and lose all the detail. Mini Killer
That's what is great about paint and at the worst case there is always simple green :)
Mercius
I actually went to my local hobby shop with the permission of my wife, and bought about 5 minis that while being great sculpts and looking fun to paint, did not overload me with tons of fiddly bits to worry over. The plan in this was to spend the time painting them to work on thinning my paints, highlighting and shading and techniques like NMM and things like that. I want to build up my ability in these things before taking on more complex minis and conversions etc. I actually read a great article on the One Ring website on NMM and the recipes they use for their LOTR minis and it was pretty helpful, especially since they use GW paints also. Mercius
well folks, here it is. My first ever semi successful attempt at NMM. It isn't 100% how I wanted it to look and looking at the pics there are a few spots I need to go and paint over/repaint, but I think the overall effect was pulled off. I am especially happy with how the shield looks so far, although the pictures don't do it justice at all, it looks much better in person.
Ferox
Well done, sir! For my money, the most convincing bits are the shield and everything from the belt down. The highlights on the sword hilt, particularly running up the blade, are too heavy to convince me, and the pauldrons are a bit too flat, but I think both of those are easy to fix. The chainmail's great, too -- I always find chainmail a real pain to work with. Best of all, the armour sets off the cloak beautifully. Great job! Mercius
Yeah, the sword hilt and a few places on the upper armor are on my list of areas to be touched up/redone. Thanks for the compliments though, I think the chainmail turned out good too, it looks better in person too as not all the subtle highlights are coming through over the pics. Mini Killer
The NMM look’s good and will look better once you touch up those areas you know about. I really like the way the colors are coming to gather. Can’t wait to see the finished piece.
cookjimjr
This is really coming together Mercius. The shield is fantastic. I know how you feel about NMM though. It is tough to pull off as we are still learning, but with the touch ups you mentioned, which should be minor, I think you will be able to pull it all off well. I look forward to seeing more. demonelf3
Great work here. I am a huge fan of the regal, rich blue in combinaion with the gold. It gives the figure a very saturated, easy to look at feel. The NMM could be blended better, but as you say, it's a difficult technique and one that takes time to perfect. Keep up the good work! Are you going to try some basic freehand maybe on the cloak?
Grimwolf
I really like the blue. It really pops IMO. I also am diggin' the shield. Keep it up!
Mercius
Thanks...I am almost done with this guy now, just have not taken pics. I am really happy with how it turned out, there are a few parts I am not happy with, but I am really proud of my work on this guy now. I have redone most of the extreme highlights on the gold and toned them down and blended them better. Same with the silver also.
Mercius
Ok guys, here we go....I am ALMOST done with this guy. I have completely redone the highlighting and blending on the gold and silver NMM areas and I am overall very happy with the result, except on the underside of the shield on the front, but it doesn't bug me enough to toy with it anymore. I also did the leather on his gloves and boots and am pretty happy there also, although I am thinking of bringing up the highlights one more level on the most raised edges. I painted the gem in the cloak clip on his chest and went back over all the raised rivets. All that is left to do now is finish up the leather, do the shield arm strap, minor touchups and figure out what the hell I am going to do with the base. Sorry I just realized I am writing a book, I will let the pictures speak for themselves. I hope you like them and as always C&C always welcome. Ferox
Looks great! Sticking to the yellow-brown spectrum for most of the figure makes the blue pop.
Mini Killer
Mercius, Great Job, the NMM came out really nice. Your color choices are working really well and I just love the blue.
Mercius
Thanks guys. I am pretty happy with the NMM for my first attempt. I also love the blue. I like the darker more reddish brown leather also, do you think one more round of highlights on the leather, or no?
