Mini Killer
Here is my first finished work from start to finish since I started painting again. It only took me 2 months to complete. I am fairly happy with it. Please provide any comments or criticisms so I can improve on the next one I have started, hopefully it won’t be 2 months before I can post the next one. Do you all think this is good enough for the inspiration gallery?
Mercius
Awesome base, really nice highlighting and the metal is very well done. The blacklining really helps draw out some of the details also. Overall excellent work. **edit** is that NMM on the blades or is your metal painting that seamless?
Kang
Very nice! I think I have this mini, given to me as a gift a few years back. I never really felt like painting it... until I saw what you did with yours! A couple of my Reaper minis, arguably less well-painted than this, have made it into the inspiration gallery, so I'd say yours certainly deserves to be in there too. But one or 2 of your photos might get rejected for having more or less of the mini out of focus - this can be corrected by shooting in apreture priority mode (if your camera has it) with the f-stop number set as high as it will go. That means the aperture will be smaller, which gives a greater depth of focus. Or so I've come to understand - I could be wrong... Still pretty much a newbie with the camera here; although I am the type of noob who's memorized a trick or 2 by rote, without necessarily fully understanding *why* they work. In any case, there's no harm in submitting your entry. Kang
Mini Killer
Thanks You, Mercius, Thanks for the complement on the metalwork it is not NMM, I used the Reaper Steel triad with a wash of chaos black. I am not very happy with the darker metal I was going for a darker metal effect were you go from the dark color straight to the lightest. Need to work on my chipped metal skills they are too large. Kang, I am happy if I have inspired you to paint a lonely mini. I will take some better shots of it and submit it to the inspirational gallery. Ferox
Oh, I like that. Smooth blends, plenty of contrast -- well done. I like the base: it has gobs of character without being at all crowded. The only criticism I can dredge up is that the whole thing feels a bit too monochrome. I think the wings are getting a little bit lost in all the shades of grey; they might look better in a dusty brown, like a khaki. The rest of the model has details in gold or red to offset the big masses of grey, but the wings suffer a bit IMO. Now that I think about it, the execution of the details -- the face, the hair, the runes and gems -- really makes this model stand out. Great job! Thanks, I agree that the it is a lot of gray, I quickly learned that that much gray is hard to work with the khaki wing color sounds like a good ideal and would have worked well. wyrmgear
Very nice model! I love the hair/mane - that really stands out. And I cast my vote along with all the others: submit it! Since you asked for criticisms, I have one to share (constructive of course!) I think the yellow metals and gray metals would benefit from some lining: black, brown, or 'armor (deep blue + black + brown, for instance)' It would help provide a more definitive separation. Just my thoughts, great work!
