Swanton
I started working on him a few weeks ago and these are the first photos I've taken. I feel like he is coming along pretty well, although I applied a wash and it made the cloak too "grungy." I'm going to have to hit that again with the Phoenix Red to brighter it up. I also want to try to add in some eyes and eyebrows, which will be a challenge. I am pleased with the shield so far. I mixed a bit of the silver to bring out the emblem in the shield, which seems to have worked. Here are some photos:
morganm
I agree; you are getting better. From Snar to the goblin to the this cleric you can see improvement. Is there some detail in his bracer on his left hand? Looks like it was covered in brown and I can't tell if it's a bracer of a wrinkly glove or something else. Mercius
Leaps and bounds improvement. This is a great clean basecoat to work from...just make sure to thin your paints. Watching this closely.
ThornDJL7
All I can say is that Shield is screaming for some freehand.
Mercius
ugh! freehand still scares the poop outta me.
Swanton
I'm just happy the orange/yellow sun symbol looks decent. I think I'll leave the rest of the shield plain. Besides, I don't have any freehand to speak of! I should have more pictures of him soon. How do you go about incorporating graying hair? I thinned out wash of grey? cookjimjr
I actually would not go with the Grey wash to get greying hair. My suggestion would be to use just your normally thinned grey in the areas where you want the greying, then highlight with white. This figure seems to be coming along a lot smoother than your previous miniatures. Keep up the good work.
cerebro1974
Keep it up, every step you take gets you better and better, and to quote a great mentor of mine: "Don't be afraid to keep your shadows real dark and really bring up your highlights to make a stronger transition!" -Meg Great job -Joe
Swanton
I posted some photos of the finished figure. Thank you for all the feedback. I keep working on getting better.
fieldarchy
Shields that have designs sculpted on them you can get away with no freehand. I would suggest instead of doing different colors on the shield. Use the compass design for your demarcation and then use two colors and alternate. Like this: This is an easy way to start honing freehand skills. You've got to start small with freehand until you are comfortable with it.

Fieldarchy, thanks for the idea on starting freehand - I've been wondering about that, and posted a "help with detailing" thread in the Painting Tips section. Most I've done is freehand the word "Badass" onto a mace so far!
