Hey Everyone,

I am very happy to say that this year I finally received a gold medal. But wait! It wasn't just one but 2 gold medals and Reaper Best in Show. I am very proud of this achievement and hope you guys like these minis as much as I do. These are examples of my ultra best super duper paint skills.

Reaper Best in Show--Isabeau LaRoche (gold in painter's category)

Yes, Congrats and well done Meg. Wish I could have been there to see them in person. You do have an awesome talent and the awards are well deserved. The basing of both pieces are spectacular! I guess I know what kind of work I need to get my self up to if I want to compete next year.

Well my photos should give a reference point but since Reaper uses the open competition format each mini is judged against a standard. The only time the entries are compared are for the best in show pieces and they award three of those: Reaper Best in Show, Non-Reaper Best in Show and I think Open Best in Show? I think that's what it is. The nice thing is that if you enter in this competition every year you are really competing against yourself. I like this myself, I am happy just to know I've improved. Next year I'll be happy if I can take a gold in all categories ::D: For me it was a total shock to get 3 awards for two minis. I was just hoping for one. The judges were nice enough to move my Capricorn to Open from Painters though because of the base work I did.

This year I planned on 4 entries but only 2 got done. Isabeau took an entire week. NMM takes me a LOOOOONNNNNGGGG time and then I spent three days on the shield alone and three different designs. I finally settled on this one but only after I had scrapped the first two tries off. So make sure you plan ahead and if you want to do freehand draw some designs in a sketchbook right before you are about to sit down and paint the design. That's my best advice for freehand. That's what I did and I had my sketchbook in front of me as a reference. The painting didn't come out exactly like the drawing but close and had the same idea at least.

I already have some entries planned for next year. Hopefully I can get them done throughout the year now and not feel so rushed right before the convention. The timing is kinda sucky for a college student--I was going through finals a couple of weeks ago when I was trying to get entries and commissions done. But it all worked out.

I love them Meg, fantastic work, truly inspiring. I am going to try my damndest to make Reapercon next year, so I guess I need to start coming up with something to paint...not that I think it will matter with the competition level, but hey, that not what matter right, what matters is entering and pushing yourself. It might be nice to meet all you crazy people too.

Coming from the Historical miniature community, this is the system we have been using for years and I have to say that it is truly the best system, however, it can be personally frustrating in that you can only blame yourself for not improving. Good luck on finishing your planned projects Meg, I feel you pain I alaways bite off more than I can chew and the night before the one competition I enter a year (hope to get to RCon some day)my wife has to tell me to take a chill pill. Sorry to highjack your thread Meg

Thank you to everyone!

I would encourage anyone who attends Reaper Con to enter the painting contest. It's free and it's a good learning experience if nothing else. Besides you are not judged against your fellow competitors. You are judged by a standard which makes it much more interesting and fair in my opinion. There's no limit to how many medals are handed out so why not try your hand at it? I did that last year on a whim--entered something I had already painted but not for the Con and it won a silver. I wasn't going to enter anything but people told me I should.

Read through the Reaper Con painting contest rules to find out more about the competition and what the judges look for. It's very informative.

It shooda been ME!

Except I didn't actually enter this year. And if I had, it sure wouldn't have been a patch on that. And yes, the pictures don't touch the actual work; the original is and was absolutely stunning. Congratulations!
