Painted Armies for Tournaments

Recommended Posts

While this is not quite what you are looking for, there happens to a thread right here in the Warlord forum for painted armies. There are only 5 people who have posted links to anything there, including yours truly.

Oh, now not only do we have to paint them, we have to take pictures of them too? Sheesh.... ik_devil.gif

I looked at that thread—QS explicitly said no pics—and he'd move posts that included them elsewhere.

Stop it. You are making me blush.

I guess I get more figures painted than some folks and not as many as others. My paint jobs won't win any awards but they are good for gaming, and by that I mean I do not worry over every little detail. Not anymore. My eyesight sucks and I have other interests, like everyone else.

I have to use a swing arm magnifying lamp and reading glasses to paint. And the fingers and elbows get stiff, etc. Still, I try to make time every day to paint, if only for a few minutes. Here is a for instance: Last night after American Idol (don't say a word), I picked up my almost finished Judas and completed his armor for about an hour while the wife watched the news and played with the dog. This morning, I got up a bit earlier than usual and painted Judas' sword hilt and blade. Flocked him with dead grass and leaves and sprayed him with sealer at lunch. He'll be all dry when I get home from work today and ready for tomorrow night.

Don't try marathon sessions. Don't leave alot of primed and ready to paint figs out where you can see them; just get a few out at a time.

Back to painting technique for a sec. Details do not matter when painting. For sculpting, yes, but for painting it is silly and a waste of time to try to detail every detail. I take the 'Impressionist' route in that respect. When you are driving down the road at 70mph and the passenger window is blurry green in your peripheral and the driver window peripheral is blurry blue, you know from what you are seeing out the windshield to your front that what is going by to both sides are, for instance, oak trees and bluebonnets. You do not have to see acorns or individual petals of the flowers.

Sorry, got carried away . . .

Check out my Highland Crusaders located at the link below. You can zoom in on most of the pics and see they are not painted that meticulously, but from 3 feet they look pretty cool.

And now that I look back at that thread, I'm overdue to update my post. I now have something like 3x as many painted Elves, almost twice as many Crusaders, and finally enough Dwarves to be worth shooting. Updates tonight if I can grab a little time after work.

See? I love painted armies too. I just don't always field them...

That's actually a pretty cool thread. Thanks for linking it. It is true that I was thinking more along the lines of the Warlord website as most newbies(myself included)would probably go to the Reaper Games page and click on Warlord from there. I think it'd do the game some good to have a gallery of sorts there. Heck I'd even volunteer to take photos at the Asylum store for that purpose. And of course having "action shots" from other parts of the planet show people that this game is played in many places and hopefully prompt more people to jump on-board.

Despite everyone going to the jugular about painted armies, is anyone else happy as hell that there is a topic with more than 3 posts in it on the Warlord Forum!

I always feel like people only paint their miniatures so they can fudge distances. "Oh I would be in b2b contact, but that miniature is painted and I don't want to damage it."

Pfft. :)

Well I am a forum junky of sorts, though I mainly frequent my MMO forum of choice. Once I've gotten a few more skins on my wall as far as Warlord goes I hope to contribute more to the overall game discussion. Believe me this discussion is a ton more civil than some of those I've seen on MMO forums.

You should start carrying a ball-peen hammer with you. If someone actually does say that to you just swing that hammer out of nowhere and smack!: now they don't have to worry about that paint job! Seriously, though, that's what the edges of the base are for. A little scuff there can be touched up easily, even if they flock the edges. :poke:

Hey guys out there like me that like to paint:

Try painting some miniatures for your gaming friends that are otherwise not so inclined. Sometimes giving a figure or two away helps to get them motivated. If not, at least you will have some opponents with painted figures. Plus, they seem to think it is cool and some even say "thanks, man."

Quite true! I am currently painting a crew for Malifaux for a good friend so he will have some colorful metal on the board.

And in the interest of representin' for the folks who don't complain they don't have time:

I work 50 to 60 hours a week ( and weekends - ReaperCon was the first days off I have had in over a year), I go to the gym four days a week for at least an hour a session, I go to Kung Fu one night a week and practice for at least 30 minutes a night except Wednesdays- I have volleyball that night. I have two kids and two grand kids, I hike on the weekends, swim on Sundays (and spend a little time in the sauna) and have at least two game nights a month. I am in a full-on relationship, just bought a new house (plenty of work there) and I take several business trips a year around the country (and I have completed a bachelors and a masters degrees and will be going back to school this fall, I hope ::):) ... and I still get my minis painted (well, mostly :poke:).

Now this isn't to knock anyone that doesn't have time, like I said I just wanted to put another viewpoint out there. There is an old saying ' There is always time for the things you want to do'. Me, for instance- I don't watch TV, amazing how much time you save there ::P:

As for the debate, whilst I am still of two minds, I must admit the arguments here have definitely swayed me. I can now better understand why some folks would play with bare metal- I would still prefer paint, but hey I won't let that get in the way of a good game.

Love, peace, and chicken grease,

-wg-

Oh, it's neither of those.

It's your attempt at coercing others to accomodate (sic) your weaknesses. Where I come from, sportsmen don't do that.

-Lionheart.

Coercing? I'm glad you think my arguments so convincing that they count as coercion, but I suspect you're alone in that. My opinion is different than that of the OP, who asked for opinions. I have no idea what your opinion might be, since you've not deigned to "enlighten" us.

Weaknesses? What would those be, precisely? (I mean other than another ad hominem attack, of course.)

Oh, and also where I come from, sportsmen don't throw straw-man arguments. It's considered ungentlemanly.

-Lionheart.

Oh, please. The principal characteristic of a straw-man argument is that it is meant to convince on some level. That wasn't a straw-man, that was an ad hominem attack in response to an ad hominem attack. Content-free ad homs deserve no more.

If you want to make an argument, go right ahead. Since your entire contribution to this thread has constituted three consecutive ad homs, it would be a first for you in this thread.

Painted vs unpainted? I want to see some sign of *effort* being put into the army. So you've got a job, kids, school, a life... it takes time to assemble and prime everything, we all understand that. Try and get one unit done. Get some basecoat down on that big monster centerpiece. Next month when you come back to play, show me you made some kind of progress and I can overlook a lot of raw metal on the table.

Otherwise it's like other people have said, why not use cardboard counters instead of figures?

Remember earlier in this thread my story about how I finished painting Judas this week?

Well, Wedge killed him in Turn 2 of our game last night.

That's COLD.

After Wedge killed one of my Crypt Bats, I asked him if he noticed the little orange freckles that I had meticulously painted on his (the Crypt Bat's) belly. Wedge took the figure in his hand, looked at it closely, and said, "Very nice, but he's still dead."

How's that for being unappreciative of a fellow Warlord's efforts?

You have to admit that I oggled your paint jobs for a significant amount of time pre-game... but when it came time to play I targeted the prettiest models first :;): You guys should have heard Dan howling when I killed Judas, I'm not sure I'll ever hear the end of that one. I think the starkest lesson I came away with is... never attack Sir Osric with melee, no matter how many models you can load in B2B with him.

In the end you cant be too upset though, having kicked the crap out of me in both games we played ::P:

Here is a for instance: Last night after American Idol (don't say a word),

^_^ Seriously though that whole post was full of nuggets of pure painting gold. I also love how the dude that won his speed painting contest "never wins any painting contest." ^_^ Can't wait to see Judas... and then kill him with my BSG!
