Darius Glenwell
I picked up a few of the GW LOTR minis when they came out. I have since bought and sold 2 of the Gandalf the White on Shadowfax. lol This is my third go on Arwen & Frodo on Asfaloth. Been taking longer and longer on some of the miniatures that I want to really look good. C&C always welcome. Enjoy!
Wilwarin
Very beautiful job! I love the blending on the clothes :) Hope this makes you a good bit of money!!! Definitely worth it :)
Darius Glenwell
Do you think so? Should I put her up on Ebay and see if she even gets a hit or 2? Been slim pickings there as of late. Thanks for the compliments on the blending! I've been working on that a lot lately.
Gorim
I love the paint job, especially the horse, but I must say that the sculpting level of the LOTR elf faces is a disgrace most of the time... Dwarfs from this line have prettier faces than their elf counterparts:/
Darius Glenwell
Totally agree with you Gorim. The LOTR dwarves are some of the best I've seen (next to the Warlord dwarves). But the elves are just so so. *shrug* I don't paint much GW stuff anyway. I'm not a fan of their sculpting. Thanks for the comments on the horse! White can be a huge pain, and I wanted a nice smooth blend for his skin. I didn't use straight white either. I used a Oyster White, then pure white. Think that helped smooth it out and not make it look so chalky.
Lyn
ooooh that piece is beautiful =)
Mercius
GW has some of the worst sculpts in the business...that being said, the LOTR dwarves are some of the best dwarf sculpts hands down...although Tre's red box dwarves and the new Dwarf Tales minis from Portugal are really rocking my world these days. I left my comments on Facebook, but I will post them here too. This really has a kick butt old school vibe that I dig quite alot. I am a big fan of the late 80's early 90's painting and this is reminicent of that style, but with better technique. The blends are all great, a few are kinda stark but most of them are great. Frodo's cloak really is done well. The thing that drives me nuts isn't anything you did...it is the size of Arwen's leaf blade, it is around 3 times the size it should be. Love it, but I like all your stuff.
Darius Glenwell
Thanks Lyn! I do what I can. Mercius: Exactly! Tre's and Werner Klocke Dwarves are the best. 80's to early 90's painting huh? Here I was thinking that I was in the 21st Century! lol Glad you all like this one. I'm painting up a Dark Elf Wizard. As soon as he is done I'll post him. I believe it's one of Derek Shubert's sculpts. I learned a lot from Linus (Viking Lodge) when he was still around. One of the first miniature painters websites I visited when I wanted to get better. Thanks all for the great comments. I really do appreciate them. Mercius
I didn't mean it looks like early 90's just that it is vaguely reminiscent...which I like, that is when I first started to paint...then quit...so I love anything that conjures up that old feeling. Frankthedm
Good work on the dress. The heavy contrast gives the intention of iridescent materiel shifting colour in the light. The whole fig has a nice oil painting look to it. Base is also great work. and since you said "C&C" The sculptor gave her manly cheekbones, your strong layering causes that to be very noticeable. Also, while it was the sculptor's fault about not having much hair detail in the right hand side of the tail's end, perhaps some trick of shading could have made it look like there was. Last bit of criticism is all on you however. The right hand side of the horses shanks are too realistic looking. This is not that bad of a thing, but this means they don't match the rest of the fig's oil painting look.
Grimwolf
I really like the style you used on the cloaks. When looking at the up close shots it almost looks like an oil painting. Such a cool style and a used to great effect. Well done keep it up!
Kang
I think this looks great, and I agree with the others who say it somehow reminds them of a painting - interesting stuff... ...The sculptor gave her manly cheekbones, your strong layering causes that to be very noticeable... An interesting article that is completely relevant to prominent cheekbone problems with minis. I personally wouldn't call Arwen's "manly", but IMO she does sort of look like she's sucking her cheeks in a bit, at least in the front view photo. Pages 1-4 of the article may also be of general interest, but the (linked) 5th page is the part I wanted to point out in particular. If you're not completely happy with her cheeks, then perhaps this will turn out to be useful as well as merely relevant. But as I said above, IMO this already looks great as-is... Darius Glenwell
Thanks all for the kind words. Never thought my work would be compared to oil painting (since I use acrylics! lol) but thank you. I'll work on the right shanks and tail Frank. See if I can't make them a bit better. Kang. Thanks for the link. I'll be reading that soon.
