Black Orcs of Kargir

The main difference between the Reven and Kargir is that the Reven had the highest model choice count of all the factions with 44 models. Kargir, while having one of the highest counts from the Savage North, they still only have 26 models. So, many of the people that are used to having a high number of choices with the gobbies, just dont have as many with the frozen gobbies.

And their doctrines don't immediately jump out at you like some of the other factions.

Just like with the Reven, their main weakness is against archery. While their non soldiers as a whole have the second highest average DV in the game (second to Kragmarr), their soldiers have the 5th lowest average in the game.

Lastly, they are a horde army by nature. Yes, you can build smaller groups, but overall they tend to be a horde army. And even withthe original Reven, people seem to love the idea of the horde army, but they dont seem to want to get all of the models necessary to actually field it on the table.

So, those items combined is probably why we have not seen as much from them, cause it does take a little more planning with their builds. But, having said that, when I have played them, they have been very affective for me (except the one time I played them against the Tembrithil machine gunners).

If anybody ever pits Kargir against the Monglash, it should be a fun one, especially if both players take the approach that quantity has a quality all its own. I was never a fan of non-goblinoids in my horde. Ogres and goblins I can deal with. Harpies and river trolls....nah.

Here is a list that is centered around one of the faction doctrines to turn an elite into a soldier to get a bunch of tough /3 soldiers out there.

Kargir - 998 points

Troop 1

Kavorgh

Helm of the Tundra Beast

Onslaught Bracers

Warbringer x 9

Goblin Sticker x 4

Troop 2

Hrodash the Painmaster

Warbringer x 2

Goblin Sticker x 4

Troop 3

Hrodash the Painmaster

Warbringer x 2

Goblin Sticker x 4

----------------------------------

3 troops +1 tactician

28 models (63 DTs, 47 MAs)

Again fairly straight forward list. Warbringers use their provoke to try and keep the defensive swings on them. Then use their tough/3 to stay alive.

Gobbies pair up to give support bonuses to themselves and other models.

Hordrashes use their disable to limit the enemies ability to damage the arbringers that provoked.

KAvorgh just gets filthy around.

And 16 out of the 28 models have a pretty good tough value.

DRG: That is an interesting build idea I hadn't considered before. After our latest game, I can see the benefit of a late game reserve; and with this build it is basically 3 free trolls. It would perform horribly in most scenario based games, but stands a defininte chance in a straight-up fight. Now you've got me looking in other army lists to see if they can replicate the strategy. Though I'll be limited to Sisters, Crusaders, and Nefsokar since they are the only other factions that can cast Resurrection.

They just posted the new BONES series plastics. With the gnoll in there (granted its not the Reaver but that is where the PRoxy rules and the ability to more easily modeify plastic minis come into play) it made me want to make a list that was gnoll heavy. So, here is what I came up with:

Kargir - 996 points

Troop 1

Toghra the Despoiler

Familiar

Venomspite, Gnoll Sniper

Gnoll Reaver x 5

Gnoll Raider x 3

Goblin Sticker x 3

Troop 2

Yenkrak Boneflail

Familiar

Venomspite, Gnoll Sniper

Gnoll Reaver x 3

Goblin Sticker x 3

Troop 3

Yenkrak Boneflail

Venomspite, Gnoll Sniper

Gnoll Reaver x 3

Goblin Sticker x 3

---------------------------------------------

3 troops +1 spy +1 tactician

31 models (58 DTs, 43 MAs)

This list does not have any real big hitter model that would make a good exploding / resurrecting target. But, still looks like it would be fun with all of the vampire running around.

And the three VenomSpites would definitely add to the fun.

I know from having tried to collect a WL orc army that big-and-beefy equals high-priced and could totally appreciate why so many newcomers to the game chose scrawny elves. This should be good for the game from an orc perspective.

So, for $85 (Mummy pledge level, plus Orc stretch goal once it is hit) - and a $2.49 Gnoll that already exists in Bones - you will be able to field the following in Bones, with zero proxying:

Kargir - 1000 points

Troop 1

Kavorgh w/Invulnerable Hide

Granak the Butcher

Black Orc Marauder x 3

Tundra Stalker x 2

Black Orc Hunter x 2

Black Orc Archer x 2

Troop 2

Boneflayer

Granak the Butcher

Black Orc Marauder x 3

Tundra Stalker x 2

Black Orc Hunter x 2

And still have 13 spare black orcs (2 Tundra Stalkers, 2 Hunters, 4 Archers, and 5 Granaks) useable as almost 500 points more of troops. And there is, of course, plenty of room to tweak that list around.

Guess I'm gonna end up with a Kargir army whether I planned to or not. :;):

If I have been reading the stretches correctly, the stretch goals benefits have only been affecting the Vampire and higher benefactor levels, not the mummy. Granted its only another $20, but just saying...

EDIT:

It would be a good thing if I went and read the updated stretch goal before responding here....

But, I think it is still a little different. Yes, it does say the Orc level stretch is available to all donators. But, it is not an auto "free" inclusion. It is a pay an additional $25 option. Still a decent "upsize" but again just saying its not a free add in.
