Hello I am just getting into the game and was wondering if I could get some help coming up with a 500 point list for the ice giants. I would very much like to get people interested in the game at the store I frequent. Are warlords too much of a point sink at this lvl or would the jarl be worth it in a 500 pointer? I’m a huge fan of monsters and I think its kind of fun that this faction has a bunch of them to choose from. Any help would be appreciated thank you in advance. Plus any idea of the style of play they have as a beatstick or more into the maneuvering.

Since, it is not a one size fits all type of question, it is difficult to straight up answer your question about the value of any single model in a list. But, I can give you a couple of guidelines.

It is to be expected that the more points a model is worth, the more it should be able to achieve on the battle field. But, the equalizer is that no matter how big the model is, it still only has a finite number of attacks it can make. So, with that in mind, the question becomes are you able to whittle down your opponents such that they no longer have the firepower to bring down your big ugly, or will the little guys figure out a way to get your big guy in a situation where they can swarm you and use their benefit of numbers to take you out. And that is what leads us to ask what models you bring with it. IT could be spell casters that stun or slow down the enemies, or buff your big guy to have him live thru a swarm. It could be a bunch of little things of your own that are there simply to tie up his models enough to let you do that whittling. Maybe it is more than one big guy such that he expends enough resources to bring one down that you still have enough with your second to finish the job. There are plenty of variables to consider. And now you see why it is difficult to answer. Another factor not even discussed is the base line of the game initiative system. You could bring the perfect list, but lose cause of a few key card flips.

HAving said all of that, here is a list that at least looks fun to play at 500 points.

Icingstead - 495 points

Troop 1

Boerogg Blackrime, Frostreaver

Oga Snowpelt, Yeti Shaman

Frost Giant Warrior

Ice Warrior x 3

Luck Stone

Oga could be used both as a buffer or as an offensive caster. And with it being a low point game, she could even use the not oft used Scrye to good measure as well. The ice warriors would be used to runblock the enemy numbers, prefering to only play defense. But, you still cannot just run the big B right up the gut, you still have to take into account what your opponent brings and how their spells or other are going to affect your strategies.

Here is another option:

Icingstead - 499 points

Troop 1

Boerogg Blackrime, Frostreaver

Oga Snowpelt, Yeti Shaman

Familiar

Luck Stone

Yeti Warrior x 4

Winter Wolf

This one is more based around Oga using the 3 point faction only spell of Immense Might in conjunction with the yeti warriors. You can only cast it on one per turn, but turning their three swings into mighty swings against standard based models sounds pretty darn fun.

Troop 1

Boerogg Blackrime, Frostreaver

Frost Giant Spearman

Frost Giant Warrior x 2

Troop 2

Svetlana, Frost Giant Princess

Frost Giant Spearman

Troop 3

Frost Wyrm

Troop 4

Frost Wyrm

Troop 5

Luck Stone

How is this for a all monster list? Any input would be appreciated thank you.

Unfortunately, Svetlana's minimum troops size is 2, so your build would not be legal.

As for why Jason used Oga instead of Svetlana in the previous builds, 1) he's 50-something points cheaper, and 2) as an Elite, he then becomes a part of Troop 1 (rather than having to field Svetlana as a Solo via the Outrider ability from the Monsters doctrine), which provides combined arms to Troop 1 (having more than one phase of combat available to the troop).

To answer the question from the OP, no, the high point cost of a warlord does not necessarily prevent them from being useful. However, if you are intending for this to be an intro or demo style force, having a costly model as part of the force can be difficult to play correctly, right of out the gate. Of course, if the force that is squaring off against it is of a similar build, then that tends to re-level the playing field again.

Shak is correct. You had asked for 500 point lists, not 1000 point lists. So, I was trying to create lists that met your requests while still giving a plethora of in game options. And Svetlana was just too expensive to try and fit in at 500 points.

I've started with a 500pt Frost Giant list:

Troop 1:

Boerogg

Frost Giant w/spear

Frost Giant w/sword

Troop 2:

Yeti Cheiftan

Winter Wolf

Ice Toad

What really drew me to the game is the ability to paint so many different types of models. Plus, I like monsters ;)

The Chieftan's group is fun to learn the rules with but not too effective. The giants scare the heck out of my opponents. However, we have found that the game seems fairly balanced.

The other factions that are being played in my group so far are Crusaders, Elves (first book list), Necropolis(forgive me if this name is wrong - it's the one with the vampires) and Reptus. The giants have done well but haven't run away with every game.

In this particular case, that of building a small pointed list using several big pointed models, it would seem that the benefit of the SA synergies would give more than the extra troop activation. That is, if you want to keep the three frost giants, I would suggest dropping the chief and making it all one troop. Here is one possible list option that still resembles your overall objective:

Icingstead - 498 points

Troop 1

Boerogg Blackrime, Frostreaver

Frost Giant Spearman

Frost Giant Warrior

Ice Toad

Yeti Warrior x 2

Assuming that you are all players of similar skill level and understanding on the rules, then it sounds like they are playing exactly as they should be. Yes, the giants look scary, and have some pretty fearsome datacards. But you only get a few, compared to what could be hordes of lesser models from the other lists. If we (the game desginers) did our jobs correctly, every list should have the opportunity to be competitive.

We all play A variety of tabletop games. We maybe a bit green with this rule system, but we are fairly tactical.

I think the designers did a great job with balance from the dozen games we've played. It is refreshing to see a balance between horde lists and small model count armies. If I had to be critical of anything, it would be for the layout of the book and the lack of scenario rules. However, with such an elegant base system, this is easily fixed with a supplement book or home brewed scenarios.

I just got a copy of dungeon crawl rules from this forum and just put an order in for some of the monsters needed.

Is there anywhere else on the site that has homegrown scenario rules? My gaming group is working on a few. Once we tested them out, I will post them here.

Troop 1

Boerogg Blackrime, Frostreaver

Nadezhda the White, Ice Witch

Familiar

Ice Toad x 2

Yeti Warrior x 3

Barbarian Berserker x 3

Troop 2

Hurgg the Bloody

Ice Toad

Yeti Warrior x 2

Barbarian Berserker x 4

Troop 3

Frost Wyrm

Equipment

Luck Stone

----------------------------------

3 troops +2 tacticians + 1 spy

20 models (48 DTs, 50 MAs)

So, this is the list that I played at the Tulsa Revival Tourney. I went 2-1 with the list. I lost to the Crusaders, then beat Elves and Necropolis. All three games came down to 2-3 models left on the table. Was very happy with how this list performed overall.

The theme of the army is take advantage of the fact that all soldiers had 3 swings. And of the Human Doctrine even though I could only take advantage of half of it. Use the Rage bonus on all 3 swings of the 7 berzerkers.

Toads and the Witch freeze burst everything in the area.

Fairly straight forward.

I'm having a great time playing the Frost Giants. Last night I squeeked out a victory on the Dwarves. It all came down to Boeragg and his Warlord. If it wasn't for my first strike hitting and killing him, they probably would have both died.

The army I had was:

Boeragg

Frost Giant x2

Frost Giant Spearman

Ice Troll

Ice Toad

Frost Wyrm

Luck Stone

Overall, they did pretty well. It was my first time playing the Troll and Wyrm. The troll did okay with his ranged attack. The Wyrm took down a troup of Dwarf miners before being killed.

We were looking through the Reaper site and my friend came up with a great idea. He loves the look of the fire giants and noticed that they are very similiar to the Frost Giants (the both have a king, queen/princess, warriors). What he would like to do is use the Icingstead rules as a template and replace references to ice with fire.

He figures using the "chaos warrior" like figures for the barbarians and a fire elemental for the Ice Golem. Any suggestions for the other models (frost wyrm, ice toad....)?

Hi all,

I found out that 1000pt armies seems to be the norm for ReaperCon. Here is my first list:

Troop 1

Boeragg

2 Frost Giant Warriors

1 Frost Giant Spearman

Troop 2

Yeti Chieftan

Yeti Shaman

2 Yeti

Troop 3

Frost Wyrm

Troop 4

Frost Giant Princess

Albatross Amulet

I used the monster doctrine to have the princess as a solo. My first game with them was against a Reptus army. They were pretty tough as a lot of the models had 3 tracks, which meant I couldn't rely on a lucky cleave to finish off a model. This was a straight up battle. I ended up winning with the Frost Wyrm, Yeti Shaman and the Princess surviving to the end. Boeragg died on the last turn killing the Krug beast.

The main challenge for me was having enough space to effectively use my large based models as my opponent made good use of the terrain. The main advantage I had was that he had no magic to force up my burrowed frost wyrm and I could snipe up and down when the initiative allowed this.

I just ordered some of the human models for this faction but I'm not sure how to integrate them into the army. Any suggestions on how I might improve this list?
