Grimwolf
Well, here is my entry for the WAMP RBG Competition. What do you think? -Grim
Darius Glenwell
I would add more highlights to the robe. It seems almost to dark.
dargrin
I agree. Bring up the colors on the robe. I would also suggest maybe some freehand along the edge.
Mercius
I agree with what everyone else has said...still a hawt looking mini though!
Grimwolf
Freehand!!!??? Gah, why would you push me to go outside of my comfort zone? Its like you want to help me get better or something!? Lol. Freehand is definately an option. I may however be placing her on a base where she is walking through a stream. That way the darkness looks more like wetness... I guess I can still do the Freehand anyhow... gah, guess I ought to just man up and give it a shot. I do think you are all right I ought to bring those highlights up a bit more. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated!
SIGIL
Lookign good thsu far Grimwolf! I REALLY liek the purple. Makes fro a very nice contrast with the blonde hair. I won't make any suggestions as to what you shoudl or shoul not do as I am not a painter myself and I don't really knwo what to suggest anyway but i will say that I avoid sculpting things that i think will comprimise the end result. In some instances that means leaving a figure more " plain ". I think in the end what matters most is that the result is pleasing to the eye. Whether that means lots of freehand and trick effects or just a very well painted mini with no special effects. Also Freehand does not have be complex either. Cyradis
I've been thinking on what I may try freehand first. Grimwolf, c'mon! Be brave! My ideas for simple patterns are a row of sideways S shapes (slightly more curled) for trim, and perhaps a fleur de lis tattoo or crest. Those sorts won't be too bad to try on paper first. Note however, that trying to draw a tiny fleur de lis on your hand for practice with a thick runny-ink pen leads to a black smudge. I didn't have paper handy when I was practicing!! Maybe I'll try freehanding a basic celtic knot. Google images helps a bunch on looking things up! As far as highlighting, I'd just go back with the original color and re-touch the higher parts. Often I'm finding that doing that has a mild highlighting effect since the first color gets darkened by shading. Simple touch-up fixes it, and preserves color. As I've said about skin too, I like subtle in general. If I'm wearing dark purple, no matter how much the sun shines on it, if it isn't satin or sparkly, it won't be lavender suddenly on highlights. Darius Glenwell
Cyradis, However true RL may be, in mini painting exaggeration is the key. most fabrics won't be highlighted to white, but you will still see some higher gradients in the light. Cyradis
Exaggeration to an extent. I do highlight, but I try to keep the color still. It makes things pop and stand out sure, but I find that too much detracts. Like I said, it is my opinion on the matter. You do see higher gradients in light, but I won't go past what seems right when I look at it - and that generally falls at my original color. Grimwolf
Thanks Tre! Im glad you like the purple. Thought I would try to go with darker tones on the clothes and try to make the face light to create the contrast and try to draw attention to the face. Now the key is to paint the face well. ;) As far as the freehand goes, I have been debating over this for the last day and I want to branch out, but as this will be my first attempt at freehand Im thinking I may hold off and try to paint this to the best I can (seeing as how it is a contest). However mark my words I will be posting a mini here soon with some freehand. You can take that to the bank!!! Thanks for the comments on the highlighting, I have also been debating on whether or not to bring the highlights up to white, I respect all of your opinions and appreciate the feedback. Now Im off to paint!!
Grimwolf
So I had a bit of time last night and this morning. I was gonna work on the robes but realized I don't have any of the purple ( I borrowed it from a friend at paint night)so, I did some work on the rest of her. I think I am finished with her face. Not sure I am 100% happy with it. Those eyes are just soooooooo small. Let me know what you think.
Cyradis
I like what I see so far. Does look like a specifically smaller face than others, but you've done well. Gotten her eyes pointed in the same direction and all that. She even has an expression it seems, instead of being blank. Personally, I think that's the most important part on the face. The armor seems like it wants a bit more shading. Possible to get a pic seeing more of her left side? :)
Mercius
Cyradis, these minis are true 28mm scale, so they are super tiny. Sorry if you already knew this, but I know when I ordered my minis from RBG I was blown away by how small and detailed they were, the eyes on these things are crazy small. I think Cyradis is right on the armor, a little more shading, especially in the deep shadows would make it pop more. Looks really good though, this contest is turning into a monster lol. Cyradis
Did not know which scale was used, but yes that would make them super tiny. Smallest scale one I've painted was one made in ~'78 that my father never got around to painting. Lead figure instead of pewter too. She was... interesting. Seems all figures from that time period were at a smaller scale, as all his figures are dwarfed by my usual.
Mercius
The GW and Reaper ones are larger...darksword and Ironwind metals still have the tiny sculpts....oh and RBG too lol.
