September roll call

Recommended Posts

Okay, this month I'm gonna replace my dead W&N S7 #1 with another good default brush. srsly. If the lab doesn't murder me first.

Mission accomplished! My favourite art store had a sale on Series 7s, so I picked up two #1s and a #2. Now I can have fun painting again!

(Good thing, too -- I need to paint up twelve goblins for a 4E adventure I'm running in two weeks.)

I decided to commit to painting a Crusader army in time for the Warlord tournament at Owlcon (Houston gaming tournament) the last weekend of January 2011. All of the models for my list are primed white and ready to paint. I plan to visit the Reaper store over the next few months for some painting lessions. My goal is to paint five each month. If I meet my goal, I will have them table ready in time for the tournament! I hope that posting my progress on the roll call will help me get a good start! I have started basecoating my Templar Knights, but need to get going to get them done by the end of September!!

Duke Gerard

Halbarad, Priest of Aurelius

Sir Malcolm, Lightbringer

Ian, Mage Apprentice

Acacia, Ivy Crown Ranger

Templar Knight X6

Templar Ironspine X4

Templar Unforgiven X4

Ivy Crown Archer X4

Celestial Lion

Hound of Judgement

So much for posting here to make me accountable! No progress to report for September :(

Did I miss an October roll-call thread?

In any case, I finally got the cap off one of those #1s and put some paint on a goblin. O bliss! It goes where I want it and stays where I put it!

Mostly I've been building conversions lately, putting together a new set of PC figures for my Friday night D&D group. Everyone wants big axes for some reason; sheesh.

Dwarfs mostly painted on my end: finishing up the last of the Hammerers, and I managed to paint 16 Thunderers on top of that! Also started the Dark Elf project: pre-painted black 22 warriors, and based/washed flesh. Actually hoping to get these done by this time next week (so end of month!)...

Until yesterday, real life kept me away from the workbench since early August. Touched up the paint on one model (rubbed off during transport), knocked out the main sculpting on a 'jewelry' pin, and cast some Hirst Arts blocks and Woodland Scenics rocks. This was my first attempt using dental stone and Hirst molds. I only have 3, and they have been in storage for years, so I wasn't sure what to expect. It was fun and the results were nearly perfect, I think. Can't wait to try another type of dental stone, hopefully tonight.

By the end of the month:

Experiment with new dental stone

Finish details on the pin

Experiment with moldmaking on...I dunno, yet...something else

Cast the 'something else'

Make a mold of the pin

Cast the pin at least 15x, maybe as many as 20x

Cleaning, painting and finishing the new pins will roll into early November. Deadline for handoff is November 7.

Where did you get the dental stone from?

GW announced they're doing a tower for Warhammer Fantasy. I already have a few Hirst molds, and figure I can do better. Been messing around with hydrostone, but everyone says dental plaster is the way to go...

I never had decent results with dental plaster. I have seen some that was done well, and it is very nice, but I have been using Ultracal 30 for years without any real issues. (I can break ultracal 30, but it is tougher than PoP, and has been holding up well.)

I read most of the reviews and recommendations on the Hirst site re: dental stone and other casting materials, but wasn't quite ready to spring for a full box just yet. So, I just asked my friendly neighborhood dentist ::D: for some advice, where to order, if he could sell me some, etc. He said WhipMix here in Louisville makes some the best, though unless you're a dentist or distributor it can get pricey.

He gave me samples of a white dental plaster, a tan stone and a blue stone, suggested I try them out. Later I will just add to his regular order and pay him. I don't have the names of the mixes or reviews, yet, but I'll get there.

Never tried Ultracal 30. I have tried Hydrocal (Woodland Scenics), but it's so light and fragile I can't find a use for it beyong static, hands-off displays. It works as designed, I'm sure, but that design does not include a busy game table.

Picked up a brush for the first time in 7 months. Just slapping some paint on an old Target Games resin graveyard set that has been sitting around for more years than I would like to admit. Plan is to finish that this weekend and maybe work on some terrain. Then one or two Warlord figures while I wait for the exchange mini I ordered to arrive. Then that will be my focus for most of next month. Lets see what I can get done in these last few days of October.

Yeah, I cast something in Hydrocal once. It would be fine for a model railroad or something, but it is nowhere near robust enough to survive the average gaming group. Ultracal 30 is harder than PoP, which is tougher than hydrocal (IME). As I said, some people swear by dental plaster - I swore at it. <_<
