Moderator TaleSpinner Posted October 13, 2010 Moderator Share Posted October 13, 2010 Well, it is about time I do another WIP. All my other work this last summer has been contest stuff, so it has been a while since I've posted here. I'm currently painting this mini for my wife for our new (and first) pathfinder campaign. I'm going to be doing a mini for each character in the game, so no monsters for me for a while. Hours 1-2: So far I've just been base coating. Nothing is close to done yet, and only the eyes have had any level of work on them at all. I'm using the Marine Triad and the Indigo Triad as my primary colors. Does this officially enter me into the Cult of Purple and Teal? Have a good night, Andy

Cyradis
Very nice one - although I'm biased because those are almost identical color themes to the way I painted mine years ago (my quality has since improved dramatically, but I have a soft spot for that figure). morganm
That blue is ELECTRIC! Holy Cow! Dos it look that vivid IRL or just comes off like that with lighting + camera? Looking good, as usual, and will love to see the final!
Moderator TaleSpinner Posted October 21, 2010 Author Moderator Share Posted October 21, 2010 That blue is ELECTRIC! Holy Cow! Dos it look that vivid IRL or just comes off like that with lighting + camera? Looking good, as usual, and will love to see the final! It is that blue in RL. I've highlighted it now and it toned down a bit as the trim went to white. I was going to post last night, having finished her face and a bunch of other stuff, but then I got a look at the pictures and realized that I'd really messed up on a part of her face; there's no way I'm showing that to anyone! I have a date tonight with her to glaze her skin tones into submission. Andy
Jabberwocky
Great start. Wonderful, bright blue you've go going--quite fitting for a water sorceress. The eye I can see looks great. The orange-y brown for the hair will contrast nicely with the blues. Looking forward to more!
Moderator TaleSpinner Posted October 25, 2010 Author Moderator Share Posted October 25, 2010 Hours 3 through 5.5 Well, she's coming along nicely now. BTW, she has a really, REALLY big hand. I never noticed how big her hand is until I put paint on it. I'll likely start painting the hair and other accessories this week. Comments and critiques are welcome. Cyradis
She's turning out really smooth. I agree, the hands on this figure are very large. Made painting the fingernails specifically (she has blue nail polish on mine) really easy at least! Are the eyes going to stay a solid blue? I like the effect, just wondering if that was the finished intent for them.
Krolik1519
Looking good! I like the highlights on the scaly part. I agree about her hands, I think her head is huge too, but it reminds me how many of the Warhammer figures look.
Jabberwocky
Excellent work on the scaling of the dress. I might suggest a few select additional highlights--the highlighting on the scales look pretty uniform from the waist to the knees. The blues on the dress are coming along nicely. I'd like to see a bit heavier darklining around the trim along the bottom and between the "plates" on the hips (as per my usual critique...). Not sure where you are at with the blues, but they are looking quite good thus far in the back especially, but IMHO could be pushed both lighter and darker. Fantastic work on the eyes! The skintones look a bit flat yet, but that may be a function of the photo. What color are you going to go with on the circlet on her head? Obviously just based at this point, but it looks to be pretty close in color to the hair.

I like the effect, just wondering if that was the finished intent for them. Strange, must be the photo or the computer, because they aren't all blue in RL. There is a black pupil, honest. Done The blues on the dress are coming along nicely. I'd like to see a bit heavier darklining around the trim along the bottom and between the "plates" on the hips (as per my usual critique...). Yeah I agree; I haven't started the dark lining yet. Once again, my friend, you are making me do what I already knew that I should but was trying to get by without anyway. What color are you going to go with on the circlet on her head? Obviously just based at this point, but it looks to be pretty close in color to the hair. Gold with sapphires and pearls. The hair is much lighter now too. Thanks everyone. I'll have new pictures up sometime this weekend. Andy
MamaGeek
The scaling looks beautiful, and her eyes look very nice. (My eyes are always very basic, because I'm terrible at them.) The teal dress could use some more contrast. For the shadows, since you appear to be an advanced painter, I'll suggest an advanced color theory technique: use very, very, very thin layers of complimentary color in the shadows. For teal, that would be a reddish orange. If you were painting with oils, you would mix some compliment into your teal to make your shade color. With acrylics, however, there's transparency, so you can paint thin complimentary color right over the base. (That is how I shaded my Golden Demon River Troll.) The dress could also use some smoothing, so go over it with some more very thin layers of your base and highlight, in the appropriate places, after working on the shading. You know, you'd think that after 20 years of painting, I'd have put some time into color theory, but in truth, I've always just painted by instinct and what "feels" right. The one draw back of this is that I've never tried using the complimentary colors as you describe. I understand warm and cool colors, but have never really played with the effects of using the compliments (which is likely one reason my shadows never look deep enough). So, that said, I'm going to do it on this mini. Thank you very much for giving me this push forward, I needed it. Now I am really looking forward to my lunch hour so I can paint. Kang
She's looking pretty great so far IMO. I hear you about never really getting into colour theory stuff in many years (off-and-on) of painting. Then a certain stealthy late-night board member PM'd me this link and my eyes were opened. It's nothing to do with using complementary colours for richer shading or anything, but it is a pretty amazing example of what can be done using colour theory, choosing appropriate colour temperatures to reduce the appearance of concave or convex surfaces. Kang PS. The eyes look blue to me in that last group of photos too. Weird...
Moderator TaleSpinner Posted November 4, 2010 Author Moderator Share Posted November 4, 2010 Whoa!!! Well I finally got time to try shading with a compliment. For the Deep Ocean dress I glazed Phoenix Red into the shadows. I have to tell you though, that when i had it mixed up and on the palette, I had serious reservations. The two colors just seemed so vastly different. I was starting to think that Joy was having me on. So then I did it and put a few light glaze layers down and, BAM, the dress just came to life. It is amazing. I don't fully get it, but I'm sold. I also glazed in some mid tones to even things out and then brought the highlights another notch toward white. So, thank you Joy. I'll have more pictures in a day or two. Andy
