drcyclops
I’m going to start painting some Ultra Marines for a friend and I would like some advice on what RMS paint colors I should use to get a traditional look for them.
orcsoul
Ultramarine blue would be the base color used, it's the closest match to GWs blue color used for the Ultramarines, the rest would be whites and maybe something similar to cloudy grey/stone grey or a silver metallic for the trim depending on the look you want. vs Wish I could figure out how to reduce the size of that GW image... lol
Kengar
+1 orcsoul Though I might use gold for the metallic trim instead of silver. Also Aged Pewter & Tarnished Steel for the weapon (roughly equiv to Tin Bitz and Boltgun Metal).
drcyclops
I was thinking about using Sapphire Blue since I already have some. How close would that color be, it's not my army I'm painting?
orcsoul
Looks pretty close to me still, but ultimately it's your call. The large swatch of color next to the ultramarine blue RMS color is the games workshop ultramarines blue basecoat color (name slips my mind). drcyclops
Ultramarine blue it is then. Now all I need to figure out what company color to go with.
Kengar
FWIW, According to various color matching sites, Citadel's Ultramarine Blue ≈ VGC's Ultra Marine Blue ≈ VMC's Ultramarine ≈ Rackham's Wizard Blue ≈ RMS's Sapphire Blue ≈ P3's Cygnar Base Blue I've usd P3's Cygnar and it's darned close to GW's UMB to my eye. If you are just starting some UMs and don't have to match any older ones, just pick a medium royal blue like any of the above and stick to it. It will be close enough. Or, just get UMB from GW and use that as your base coat.
