Dr.Bedlam
1. ...because online stores don't provide a place for us Alpha Geeks to go hang out with our own kind. 2. ... because Amazon.com won't stand there and pretend to be interested in who was the better captain: Kirk or Picard. 3. ... because Troll and Toad doesn't hold game demos on a game I might be interested in. 4. ...because online stores don't participate in FREE RPG DAY. Any others?
Spike
5. Even a frumpy girl can get treated like a hottie.....whether she wants to or not. 6. FREE DICE! If you wait long enough, somebody is bound to throw one away in disgust. Be ready.
warlordgarou
7. Because when addiction strikes, and you need that mini NOW, waiting, even for overnight shipping, just isn't going to cut it. 8. Amazon isn't going to listen to how your eight-level paladin fought off a goblin horde either. 9. Your FLGS is the best way to find local players for whatever game(s) strike your fancy. MamaGeek
I used to suppor my local game store, until I had some personal disagreements with the owner. I don't like to badmouth the store to other people, but I won't give them any more of my business. It's a real shame, too. I have a local Hobby Lobby, but the closest Hobbytown, U.S.A. is an hour away, and the next-closest actual game store is about 45 minutes away, in a heavy traffic area I like to avoid. fieldarchy
So far a whole bunch of good reasons! Just to throw something out there for Reaper Gus (our game store manager/GIC (guy in charge)) 14. Online stores don't run Friday Night Magic 15. Online stores don't run Magic the Gathering Tourneys 16. Online stores don't provide female gamers with rampant sexual "harassment" even when you have no make-up on, covered in sweats from head to toe and the hair is thrown in a bun. 17. Online stores don't hold a 4 hour paint club every weekend where you can learn from others, meet new painters and try new paints! 18. Online game stores don't have vending machines stocked with goods you try not to keep in the house but are oh-so-tempted to buy (and usually do) 19. Online game stores don't hold a 4 day convention every year where you get to meet the people you talk to daily
kristof65
20. If you're a regular, they may give you a job when you get laid off from yours 21. They may let you display or even sell your painted minis there. 22. You can look through the book before buying it 23. If they don't have an expert on staff for a given game, they'll know a regular who is
Anne
I definitely agree, supporting your local game shop is very important!! Unfortunately due to the economy my local shop was unable to keep up and had to close its doors. It was very sad for everyone, some REALLY great people there. Not to be a downer but my local comic shop also seems to be following the downward spiral, although its still fighting at the moment. Now my closest game shop is at least an hour away(in good traffic).
Dragon Snack
24. local stores not only support the game industry, they also support your local economy. 25. game store owners are totally awesome! Ahem, I may be a *little* biased about that last one...
warlordgarou
FWIW - last night, I did indeed support F(not-so)LGS. (I drive about 50 miles each way to play Warmahordes on Thursdays. Great store, just wish it was 20 miles or so closer.) Anyway, I wanted one fig, but while looking for it, I saw another that I had been meaning to get. (Aptimus Marketh and Hakaar the Destroyer, respectively.) Aptiumus got used last night, Hakaar won't see play for another few weeks. But he was there, on a peg, almost calling out for me to pick him up. And I like to listen to my addictions.
Bruunwald
26. Because perhaps more than any other industry, the gaming and hobby industry really is more of a community, than a commodity. 27. It's one of the few places where a customer's input in a conversation between clerk and another customer is encouraged, considered, and even enjoyed.
