Moderator TaleSpinner Posted February 15, 2011 Moderator Share Posted February 15, 2011 So I was surfing the boards last week and came across this post by Michael G (ixminis): Aardvark Topic. I thought, "I can sculpt that." As the day wore on, the idea wouldn't leave me. Also I really need a little diversion from the Beholder eye stalks as they are a bit tedious and I really need a break (don't worry, I'll get back to it soon). So one thing led to another and after many PMs, I'm now sculpting an Aardvark for Michael. Here is the primary reference shot that I am using: Aardvark Picture This guy will by quite small (though still on the large size for an appropriately scaled aardvark) at 13 mm high at the hip and 24 mm long. The following photos are the side and front view of the armature I formed and soldered this weekend: The following is the first hour of sculpting: The tail is essentially done. The putty on the body is all just under-pinning ar this point. I plan to have this finished by the end of February. As always, comments welcome. Moderator TaleSpinner Posted February 17, 2011 Author Moderator Share Posted February 17, 2011 I put a couple of hours in on this today. The legs look long and skinny mostly because the body and hair haven't been added yet (though I think the feet might be too small). Obviously, the front legs are only half done. MamaGeek
Looking good! (Reaper should really hire you, man! Did you ever get any buyers for your Beholder?)
Moderator TaleSpinner Posted February 17, 2011 Author Moderator Share Posted February 17, 2011 Looking good! (Reaper should really hire you, man! Did you ever get any buyers for your Beholder?) Thanks! No, I'm not done with the Beholder yet and won't seriously approach anyone until I am. So far, all I have proved is that I can start a sculpt; I haven't actually finished anything yet. I just really needed a break from the endless eye stalk sculpting . I don't have a deadline for that sculpt, so I thought a little two week diversion was in order. This sculpt is really good for me too, as it is requiring me to learn small scale detail work and how to deconstruct and build the anatomy of a real creature. I've already learned loads here that will directly apply to the eye stalk sculpting I am doing. Next, I'll be tackling the front feet and then the head and hope to have them done by the end of the weekend. I'm a bit nervous about the eyes as these will be my first small scale eyes (they are even smaller than a human's would be). I'm going to have to go back and re-watch the head portion of the JVS's Mini Mentor video again before attempting the head. So my plan is to have this done by the end of this month and to then buckle down and get the beholder done by the Easter. Andy
Moderator TaleSpinner Posted February 17, 2011 Author Moderator Share Posted February 17, 2011 @ixminis: Did you want any kind of base sculpted for this, a tab for a slot base, or do you just want me to leave it with the brass wires coming out of the bottom of the feet? Moderator TaleSpinner Posted February 22, 2011 Author Moderator Share Posted February 22, 2011 Did the front legs and underpinned the head. Aardvarks have very large claws on their front feet. Andy
ixminis
heh, for some reason, the e-mails on this thread are intermittent. I think it'd make sense to avoid basing other than pins protruding out the bottom. I've got a few concepts for how this will fit in the diorama and all of them are compatible with pins! Thanks for asking! Lookin' good!
Jabberwocky
Coming along nicely! You will be sculpting machine gun and laser options for the aardvark, right?
Moderator TaleSpinner Posted February 24, 2011 Author Moderator Share Posted February 24, 2011 ...an aardvark, with friggin lasers!
Moderator TaleSpinner Posted February 24, 2011 Author Moderator Share Posted February 24, 2011 Finished the head shape, jaw, and snout. Also added eyeballs (no eye lids yet). Andy
Qwyksilver
So, this thread reminds me of a funny story from work a few years back. Totally unrelated to sculpting however, it is still funny and on topic-ish. I used to work in the maximum security unit of psychiatric hospital for highly aggressive male patients. We had a gentleman there who was psychotic most of the time and had these little bursts of lucidity maybe 3-4 a day for less than a few minutes each time. Evening snack for him usually involved some sort of a candy bar. One summer I brought him a candy bar for his snack. He took one bite, spit it out, said it was a neck choker (which usually means he thinks it's poison or it made him gag a little). I went to get it to throw it away and he growled at me. I told him he really needed to either eat it or throw it away, because we had recently had a big ant infestation, and if we didn't there would be ants all over his room. Then I asked, "And if that happens, what will you do?" He uncovered his head, looked up at me, and said: "I'll get a F***ing aardvark!" Moderator TaleSpinner Posted February 27, 2011 Author Moderator Share Posted February 27, 2011 It is done, except maybe a slight trim on one of the ear edges. And in case you are wondering how big it is, here is a life size shot: It is about 13 mm at the top of the back which brings it to upper thigh on most Reaper human minis. It was quite a challenge and I had a lot of fun sculpting this guy. Thanks for the chance, Michael. Comments welcome, Andy
