MamaGeek
This is a gaming figure for a friend's wizard character. He turned out a lot darker than I'd planned, but I thought I'd post him up, anyway.
Ferox
Whoa! Is this the staff from the wood-grain thread? I like the character the big, open grain gives it -- makes it look a bit larger than life, like it was carved from a branch of Yggdrasil rather than some mundane tree. The glowing eye on the skull in the base is a nice touch.
JimL
Beautiful, the colors work together so well on the back and that base is great. Nice metal work too.
Anne
Nice work! The weaponry in particular came out great, and I like the colors you used for his robes. The basing is killer too, very atmospheric!
joshuaslater
I'm angry with you for posting this!! Very angry. A slammin' paintjob like this makes me want to buy this model, when I've no immediate model funds, and to add insult to injury, now that I'm in my 40's, I can't remember if I already have this guy, so I just feel stupid. Thanks. This piece better make it into the Reaper catalog or inspiration gallery or I'll call Ed Pugh everything but a human being on the frothers forum.. Well done!!!! MamaGeek
Really? I'm pretty shocked at the reaction from y'all so far, because I felt he wasn't nearly as good as all that. He's just so very dark, with not nearly enough contrast. Maybe I'm being hard on myself, but I really felt like I got lazy, and let myself work with thicker paints than I should have, just to get it done faster. He is just so highly detailed, and I kind of got tired of painting him. (I have no idea how I'll ever finish the dragon on my table. I think I'll have to paint him over several months, with other minis in between, or I'll drive myself crazy!) Well, I won't have anyone say I'm not gracious, so thank you all, very, very much. I'm glad you like him! (The friend I painted him for liked him, too.). Oh, and yes, that is the wood grain I posted in the wood grain painting thread. That part was actually very fun, and I wish I'd tried it sooner on other minis. I'll definitely use the technique again on future models. Right now, Talespinner is helping me with a conversion. I sent it to him in the mail, and he is so kindly going to fix my horrid sculpting attempt on the mini's hand. I honestly don't know what I'd do without all you wonderful folks! You built up my confidence over the years, provided useful constructive criticism, and even sent me birch tree seeds in them mail (dargrin!). Y'all are the best! He's just so very dark, with not nearly enough contrast. Yeah, really. I can see your point about "not enough contrast", particularly from a value perspective, but I think you backed into a scheme that works well without big swings of light and dark. Kevis has rich reds, purples, and blues, and they're different enough to entertain the eye (or at least mine). If some criticism will make you feel better, I can't for the life of me figure out what's glowing green to his lower left. Is it radium slime on the base, or something to do with the dagger? Moderator TaleSpinner Posted February 21, 2011 Moderator Share Posted February 21, 2011 Honestly, I like the dark tones. I think it strikes the right mood for this piece. My only critique is the OSL. I can't quite tell what is supposed to be glowing. I think it is the runes on the floor, but if so they need to be another stage or two toward white to really sell it. Also the glow needs to wash onto his robe a bit more. That said, I think the tones and mood set by the purple and blue are spot on. This is one serious wizard. I also like the emotion you put into the face. I can certainly understand your concern on the large project blahs. I'm in the same spot with my beholder sculpt. The best cure is to take it easy and work on other other projects once in a while to give yourself a break. Dragons take forever, with all the endless highlighting of the same set of shades on all those scales.... What dragon are you working on? Andy PS: I haven't gotten the mini yet, though there is no mail today so I'm assuming it'll be here tomorrow. I'll PM you when it shows up. Dilvish the Deliverer
I really like it and don't think that it needs more contrast between light and dark. Kevis is evil mage working for the Overlord faction in Warlords (slavers that is) so I think thematically that a darker scheme is warranted. Ultimately we tend to be our own harshest critic. I like it and it has inspired me to get back to painting my own copy of this. (I'm almost forty and I can remember I already have a copy of this one ). Great job. Mercius
MG- You know my painting style and what I like pretty well, I prefer the darker more subdued style, rather than the OMG I POOPED A RAINBOW ON A MINI style of highlighting. While I feel you could have pushed the highlights further, what you did works on another level altogether, so it is still a finely painted mini. Your style overall has always impressed me, I actually think you and I have similar approaches to how we paint for the most part, I also know like me, you are hard on yourself...you did a great job here, so enjoy it. That being said, the skin tone is the part that works the least for me, with the weapons being the highlight of the piece.

MamaGeek
The base is a premade resin base. The part I painted green is some kind of arcane symbol. I wanted it to look glowy, but I do know that the effect didn't quite come off. I also know if I wanted true OSL from it, I needed some splash on the robes, but I got lazy and left them out. (Andy, I just mailed the conversion mini on Sat, so she shouldn't be there before Wed, considering the Federal holiday. Oh, and I'll second your response to Mercius' comment. Freakin' hilarious!) MaGie
That's wonderful! You should be very happy that it turned out this dark, I love it! Gives a great atmosphere to the miniature. The colour combination looks great, so does the NMM.
joshuaslater
I found one in a blister here in the house. Yay!! Glad it got the acclaim it deserved.
