Blight Fang Dragon

In the end, I guess it comes down to whether it is a paid commission or a gift paintjob. If it is a gift, then the painter has all the say so. If it is a paid commission then it depends on if the customer is paying enough to have the right to ask for specifics like that. But, if they are, then the customer gets what they want...

Well, he bought the dragon ($50), but the painting is a gift. Plus, this is a good friend, not just some stranger. I don't want to ignore what he wants altogether. However, he is not completely stubborn, either, and is willing to consider what I suggest out of artistic experience.

Treasure is fine, but then I'd walk away from a Black dragon concept. The subtle tones of the black dragon are too subdued to compete with the flash and riot of color in a treasure horde. If you do end up wanting both, I'd recommend sticking to more subdued tone treasure in the silver tone values, with very little gold.

He definitely wants a black dragon, so that part of the project is set.

I was thinking somewhat along the lines of what you suggest, about subdued tones. I thought of making the terrain swampy, with the treasure perhaps sticking out of the mud, underwater, etc. so that it doesn't dominate the piece. Do you think that might work?

Yes. How comfortable are you with the concept of doing water resin pouring. Consider making low spots with the treasure and then pour in lightly brown stained water effect so that the treasure is just showing here and there through the water.

I have a bottle of Woodland Scenics water effects, which I used on my River Troll base to good effect. Yes, that sounds workable.

When doing the resin (which I suddenly have a lot of experience with after pouring all that water for my crawl), I'd recommend a mix of green and blue ink and brown paint to tint. The blue and green inks will tint your resin to make it actually look like water; the brown paint will help "murk" it up. Overall, you should end up with a nice, swampy water tone.

I like the dragon so far; looking forward to see what it finishes out like.

I haven't touched is dragon in the last few days. I spent the weekend in the hospital with my daughter, who was admitted for muscle fiber breakdown, most likely resulting from a viral infection. She's home now and walking again, though only on her tip-toes. We're all pretty exhausted, and working our way slowly back to normal. I missed having time to play with Blight Fang, but I'm glad that Rebecca got the care she needed, and is now on the mend.

Hours 8-10: Basing and extending the concept

I used Talespinner's method of Making Money to create some coins for the base. I also found some weapons and a shield in my bits box, added some more green stuff ridges, sand, and static grass. Most of this will be at least partially covered with water effects, and I'll want it to be pretty bright, so it will show through. Right now it's just a base coat.

I also spent some time extending the proof of concept further down the dragon. That part needs touching up.

Yaaay, I've been useful! :bday:

What did you think of the technique (you're the first person that I know of whose tried it)?

It was very easy, and I like the results, although some of my coins are a little thick.

On that first picture in your last post, is that a mold line on the side of the back leg?

No, that's my paint line, to show myself where I want to place the highlights.

Hours 9-12: More basing and dragon painting

There's not much to talk about here. I applied varying shades of green, brown, and gray to the base, painted the treasure, and added some scenic moss.

I also continued painting the dragon in the same color scheme as before. Some areas I covered were very hard to reach.
