Ferox
How's it going, MG?
MamaGeek
I've put in about 4 more hours since the last post. I wrapped up painting last night right at bedtime, so didn't have time for photos. Maybe I'll snap some tonight, although I'll be very busy for the next week or so. Hopefully I can squeeze in some painting time here and there.
MamaGeek
Ok, here are the new photos, as promised! Hours 13-16: Moving down the dragon! I tried to concentrate on areas that were difficult to reach, both to "get them over with," and to avoid messing up something finished while going after an awkward angle later. I'm really just continuing to extend the concept. Until I get to the wings and face, there won't be anything terribly interesting to see, just basic progress. haldir
Pretty sweet looking dragon. Love the base, really adds character & a story of sorts to it. RM
JimL
Wow, it must be hard and awkward to work on something so big. Great progress.
Ferox
Progress is always interesting. Glad to hear that your lack of posts came down to lack of time, rather than more unwelcome excitement like two weeks ago.
Anastrianna
Loving this! It looks great so far! I can't wait to see what you do next
Kannan Fodder
That is looking beautiful! I really like your color scheme. As for painting speed, or lack thereof, I've had this same dragon sitting on my painting bench for well over 4 years now, simply base coated in white primer and very dark green..... After seeing that lovely blue highlighting, I may rethink my original plan..... ~M
Anne
This is coming out really beautiful! Your blending is fantastic, really nice subtle coloring also.
MamaGeek
Hours 17-19: Body just about done, next up, wings!
fieldarchy
Hey Mama, I like where this is headed but I'd like to see a bit more punch in the blue that you are applying to the grey. Maybe it's my computer screen but it's just not looking quite bright enough for me. I'd like to see more contrast and I think it would really make this pop. You are a good painter, that's for sure! And this is a beast of a dragon and I like the direction it's just not looking like the body is quite finished to me. I'd like to see it pushed a bit more. The base is very nice as well. Can't wait to see it when it's finished.
Mercius
I didn't think about it til Meg pointed it out, but I can see her point. I like it the way it is now though and looks way better than what I would do with the same colors.
MamaGeek
I have thought about that, but he is supposed to be black. I am very concerned that if I push the blue to bright, he won't look like a black dragon anymore, and my friend definitely wants a black dragon. Yes, there is some photo dulling going on (look at the last set of photos vs. this one - same dragon, very different look). I do know that contrast is very important, though, so I'll take another look. I also planned to go over the body some more before I call it finished, anyway. I just really want to move on to the wings now. They've been calling since the project started, and it's time to give them their time under my painting lamp! Kannan Fodder
I was taking the blue color as iridescence from the black - something like ravens in bright light. I'm not sure if it's too dark or too bright, as it's more muted in the most recent picture. If the blue is too bright, you might want to try mixing in a dash of purple or dark green. Or a very thin wash of black, which will also settle into any detail recesses. I think it's looking very good. I like your base how you have it right now, so am very interested to see the water effect when it's done. You're right, this is one monster dragon! Mine is set aside right now while I try to figure out the color scheme (green) and how to hold her while I paint her. I'm a master at wiping off paint unless I attach the mini to a "handle" of some sort first. Unfortunately, Blight Fang is too big for a simple water bottle cap.... ~M
Ferox
I've been a bit worried about the blue highlights for a while now. Would mixing in a complementary colour work to bring them back to an overall neutral hue? Maybe a thin wash of brown liner over the blue highlights? It's there in the shadows on (for example) the ridge down Blightfang's back, but hints of it right in with the highlights on the scales -- just enough to tie in with the dominant colour in the shadows -- might help keep the scales "black" rather than "blue".
