Crucifix (Not a mini)

I actually painted this in the summer of 2010, and I wasn't going to post it up, but I was asked for photos, and I thought some other Reaper Boards folks might like to see it, too. Also, this being Lent, I thought it was a good time for it.

Painting this was a very moving experience for me. It was hard to balance realism against being overly graphic. I wanted this to evoke compassion, not revulsion, but still show the brutal nature of Christ's suffering.

The paint quality is also different than I usually do. The blends are not as smooth, and this is a much larger scale than I usually work at. From the distance at which it is viewed in my home, though, it makes a real impact.

The cross is about 6 inches tall. The corpus is made of resin.

I'm glad to see a positive response, and thanks for the compliments.

@joshuaslater, and his fellow non-Christians: Consider this as a sort of evangelization from me. I'm not very good about talking about my faith to people, but I try to do things like sharing my religious art, and to live my life by Christian values (though I'll freely admit I can be very bad at doing that sometimes) in order to witness to others.

One of my favorite Saint quotes is from St. Francis of Assisi: "Preach the gospel constantly, and when necessary, use words." I also heard a great story about him, where he told his fellow monks to gather together for a walk into town to preach to the populace. They all lined up and he walked them solemnly and silently into town, down the main road, and back out the other side. His monks asked him when they were going to do their preaching, and he replied, "We just did!"

I was baptized Catholic and raised evangelical (read very anti-catholic--long story) and in college evolved into a dieist with a very strong appreciation of religious art and so though not a mini and somewhat outside the scope of this forum, I can appreciate the artistry in this piece. Probably a very unnecesarily wordy way way of saying "very nicely done" :poke:

I like it. Skin tones are nice with a weathered look to the colours. The blood is perhaps too bright, causing a clash with the rest of the fig's style, though that will be eye catching if that is the intent. It looks like the wounds were all administered in the same time frame. Notably the scourge lacerations, which would have looked fantastic if they were closer to the deeper brown red where the hair and left cheek met.
