Loim
I have a Nikon D50. I bought it used off my Dad, when he upgraded to a D90. I really love it. I only have one lens for it, but I have access to all of his. While probably not the best DSLR out there, it is far more camera than I can do anything with. It's a lot of fun to shoot, and I'm a huge Nikon fan (always have been, not saying there aren't other good camera brands). Unfortunately I'm not sure if Nikon still makes the D50, having said that though, I'm certain you can pick up a D50 body pretty cheap used if you wanted to go that route. JimL
I have a Nikon D90 with a 18-105mm lense that I use for general photography but it works great for miniatures. I also bought my wife a Nikon CoolPix S4000 for Christmas and the macro mode works really well for miniatures as well. I don't have as much control as with the D90 which is full manual but you can manipulate enough of them to get a good job done.
