02619: Cloak Fiend

Recommended Posts

This guy has been sitting on my paint bench for years. I'm actually trying to duplicate one I painted and sold several years back, but that was before I put some serious work into honing my skills, and I <cough> drybrushed the first one. Not wanting the "chalky" look on this one, I'm actually trying to paint up the highlights in layers. I used RMS 09021 Snow Shadow as the base, and have mixed 09063 Ghost White in for highlights. At this point, my mix is 2 drops Flow Improver, 4 drops Snow Shadow, and 1 drop Ghost White. I'm wondering how much lighter I should go.

I went ahead and painted the eyes and mouth, but the claws aren't done yet because I haven't finished the back.

Thanks!

Here is my take on it: Cloak Fiend

My recipe for the white is as follows (all paints are Reaper Master Series):

Shade 1: 8 drops Cloudy Grey, 2 drops Ashen Blue

Shade 2: 7 drops Cloudy Grey, 2 drops Ghost White, 1 drop Ashen Blue

Shade 3: 5 drops Cloudy Grey, 4 drops Ghost White, 1 drop Ashen Blue

Shade 4: 3 drops Cloudy Grey, 6 drops Ghost White, 1 drop Ashen Blue

Shade 5: 1 drop Cloudy Grey, 8 drops Ghost White, 1 drop Ashen Blue

Shade 6: 9 drops Ghost White, 1 drop Ashen Blue

Shade 7: Ghost White

Shade 8: 5 drops Ghost White, 5 drops White

Shade 9: White

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys. TS, I really like your take. I've been struggling with a few other figures, and your advice is going to help me a lot. MG, I used the link you posted (in another thread) for painting gemstones as inspiration for the eyes.

More highlights to follow. Have company visiting, and a full weekend, so will probably sit down and do some painting when things settle down tonight.

Thanks again!

I took the highlights up a couple more levels, adding a drop of Ghost White each time, so it's pretty subtle. Actually, it's barely noticeable. post-3447-13061886103547.jpg

Photo taken outside this time, but it's overcast today, so the light is still bright. Background is just the concrete driveway.

I'm going to continue adding highlights by adding a drop of Ghost White to each level, but have been debating on using a very thin wash/glaze of Blue Liner for the deepest shadows.

Keep up what you are doing. I can really see the difference between the first and second pics. You are on the right track, just keep going.

The glaze in the shadows is a good idea too. The contrast between the highlights and shadows is what makes a mini interesting.

Coming along nicely! I'd agree with a few thin glazes of Blue liner in the recesses on the bottom half of the beastie. If you are feeling adventurous and want to play with the color a bit more, you could use a dark purple or even red (very thin!) for the deepest shading.
