Midnight Lurker
I probably should have looked into this sooner, given that I am flying out on Tuesday and all, but that would have been too easy and logical for me! I had some surgery a couple years back and now have like LOTS of metal implants. Plates, screws, pins... Am I gonna set off the alarm bells? yani
Depending on the airport, they have the full body scanners now instead of the metal detectors. I prefer the pat-down.
sentinel
I never thought of that. I have various pins and screws and flew in DEC 2010, and did not set anything off. My guess is you'll be fine.
Maltique
From my understanding you can opt in for a pat-down instead of the scanners. Here is TSA's word http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/specialneeds/editorial_1374.shtm#

I have three plates in me. New metal hardware is titanium but the stainless steel screws may set it off. The trick is metal detectors work on a single magnetic plane so if you can get your metal not perfectly parallel with the frame of the metal detector you'll be golden. Midnight Lurker
Hmmm. If steel screws will set it off then I think I'm going to buzz regardless considering I have a few piercings too. I'll be flying out of DIA, so they probably have the scanners. I think personally I would prefer that to being groped by a stranger. I mean I seriously doubt they would save my pics as a souvenier of my trip!
haldir
This will be my first time flying since they implemented the scanner/pat down, so it'll be a experience. As I posted on Facebook I should have gotten this shirt to wear the days of going & coming back: I got to 2nd base with a TSA scanner would be interesting to see the looks on their faces
Midnight Lurker
Oh my god... Do they have overnight shipping? I gotta vet me one of those! :D
Rastl
Ask your doctor for a letter saying you have metal implants. My ex had one of those for all the hardware from his spinal fusion. He actually never had an issue with the (older) scanners because the implants are nonferrous.

haldir
I'm pretty sure it general. Unless of course the TSA person is perv "Hey look at that hottie, I better go ahead a make sure she isn't a "threat!" I will say coming back from RCON a couple years ago, there was a guy in Dallas that had to get out of line, go over to a circle & place his hands in a spot. Not sure why but he was highly irritated by that. I left the line before he was done. (IIRC it was the year the TSA person was interested in my Boneyard melt, brought it home in my carry on, so a big chunk of metal sets some flags off in their scanner.) Jen As of then it was random both at Minneapolis International and the tiny little Rochester, NY airport. In Minneapolis the grandma in front of me was taken to the scanner and the guy behind me was pulled aside to have his hands swabbed and then got a pat down. In Rochester one of the guys I was with got pulled aside for a pat down and it turned out his boxers were bunched a bit so the TSA agent had to sort of manhandle him to make sure the lump on his leg was really just his boxers. My first RCon on the way home the TSA agent was more interested in my fitted Where The Wild Things Are t-shirt than he was with actually finding out why I beeped when I went through the metal detector. He just let me slide on through.

chipchuck
At my age, the pat downs are kinda fun. :)
