matsumoto
hey, all a' ya... i have been asked about wargamming as it applies to ACW...i guess the ACW fan crowd extends past wargamming, so...in lieu of having to convert the popular system around here into an ACW game, might i have some personal opinion on really good ACW systems? i'd like 15mm/6mm compatible over 28mm by far. overly rules-manual intensive is out, but so are 3 page wonders. so, if i may ask...? Castlebuilder
Johnny Reb III is my favorite.
DuxPeditum
Hello, There are several good ACW rules in 15mm: Johnny Reb, Fire and Fury, On to Richmond and others. An excellent ACW skirmish game in 28mm is Brother Against Brother
Baphomet69
Fire & Fury is our group's standard. They have both Brigade level (old) and Regimental level (new) but the 15mm miniatures and bases are the same, just represent smaller units. If you like the rules set once you read it, there is a version out there now for Napoleonics as well (Age of Eagles).
Heisler
My preference is definitely Fire and Fury over Johnny Reb. Fire and Fury's system gets most people up and running within 20 minutes or so. Trying to learn or teach Johnny Reb takes considerably longer. I like Johnny Reb and when we played it consistently every weekend or so it moved along at a brisk pace but the learning curve is just high. Another set of ACW rules is A Union Tested, I have played it and its okay, some of the results get a little whacked though which I don't like. herzogbrian
Both Johnny Reb III and Fire & Fury will get the job done for 15mm ACW. They have their pluses and minuses, but are both great games. For 25/28/40 mm, I prefer Chris Hughes' (from Sash and Sabre) rules Butternut and Bucktail.
MikeD
My old groups default ACW games were Fire & Fury for 12-15mm games, and Brother Against Brother for 25-28mm. That said, my current favorite for ACW has to be ACWarmaster. Its a port of the Games Workshop rules Warmaster, which are a set of fantasy rules for 10mm figures. Its increadibly simple to pick up, but allows for lots of tactical play. You need the Warmaster rulebook, but the ACWarmaster rules can be found for free on the interweb.
