drcyclops
I have some white Liqutex basic gesso and was thinking about using it as a primer but I have a few questions that I hope can be answered here. First can it be used and if it can on what materials (plastic, metal, resin)? How durable is it? Does it need to be thinned and if so by how much? If anyone has any insight on these questions or anything I may have overlooked would be very helpful, thanks.
Loim
If you do a search of the forums you should be able to find some really good posts on Gesso as primer. I've asked several, and gotten really good answers. I have used it some, but on the whole I prefer Reaper brush on primer. Gesso seems to work fine, and if you have some I don't see any reason why you can't use it with no problems.
drcyclops
I thought so but my search-fu is very bad so I was hoping to get some basic answers here but links could be helpful too.
Angorak
I could be wrong but I think a site called Brushthralls has a info post on using gesso. I have on occasion used both white and black gesso as a primer. The best advice i can give is that you really should wait at least 12hrs after primering to start the real task of painting. Gesso draws up in the drying process so don't be concerned too much about obscuring detail in the application.
Hot Lead
Gesso will probably work fine if thinned sufficiently. However, I can't recommend the spray gesso by Krylon... Ask me how I know. Later, Laszlo

pae
Here's a prior thread on the subject: http://www.reapermini.com/forum/index.php?/topic/37983-gesso-as-a-primer
Hot Lead
How do you know? My sarcasm aside, the spray goes on too thick and a touch grainy. Even after drying it still was too thick. It's not a big deal for fine artists as you're taught to sand between coats of gesso anyway, but not the hot ticket for miniature painters. I gave the cans to my wife to use on her canvases...
