Ghool
I switched my golds from P3 to GW on this model, and spent a lot more time getting them smooth. In addition, I did stuff I usually don't do on many of my models; freehand. It's time-consuming, but I figured if I was going to enter a competition, I had better go all out. I re-posed this thing 4 times before I was finally satisfied, and re-built the spear mid-painting, and after getting the final pose where I wanted it, I felt it needed something more to get a more dynamic feeling from the model. This is the second time I have ever sculpted cloth, and I think the flag came out a little thick. At least now I have a much better idea of how to do this sort of thing. I re-built all the pistons in both arms with brass rod. I had to cut off the left arm coupling, and re-sculpt the ball joint to get the shield arm to sit that far back. I also had to add a piston to the left leg, as moving it out that far from the body left a huge gap on the inner thigh. The spear was simply extended and the haft re-sculpted over top. I hollowed out the central post in the torso to get it to lean back farther, so it wasn't so hunched over, and the had to re-fill a large portion of it. In all, it was quite a bit of work to get it as close to the artwork pose as I could. Comments and Critique is always welcome. Dinoman87
This guy looks awsome. Nice job on all the swirls. I hope you win first prize for this.
Mercius
Awesome stuff man. I live in Seattle and was planning on entering the contest, but completely hosed my entry this weekend and start classes this week, so not enough time to repair and fix the issues with it. I am pretty bummed as it would have been my first painting comp. I don't play the games, so I really have no reason to come now. Have fun at the con and I hope you get a gold for this, it looks fantastic!

sgtoku
Like this a lot. The freehand swirls are very nice with the chosen color. I think the combination of warm and cool tones is splendid! It does look like a lot of work went into this. As usual, I love your colors!

Heisler
I don't know anything about this event or how much time you have. But I do think you need to increase the contrast on your metals, at the very least the shadows need to be deeper and some of the highlights need to come up. The metal on the spearpoint, in particular, bothers me quite a bit the shadow on the top surface is definitely out of place. The transitions on your blues are a pretty harsh in a couple of places as well. I would seriously consider redoing the banner. I typically don't sculpt my banners because you do encounter the problem of them being to thick. What I don't know is what this competition is looking for. You stated that you rebuilt a number of components (excellent work by the way because I can't tell you did it so they were pretty seamless) but I'm afraid the banner is going to detract from you other efforts. I just don't know what the judges are going to be looking for. If you decide to redo the banner there are a couple of other materials that you might look for. The first is the lead foil used on wine bottles. Its a nice strong flexible material that takes paint well and just looks great. You can shape it first then paint it and you should still be able to flex it a little bit after painting without causing cracks in the paint. The second material is from toothpaste tubes. Unfortunately this has gotten harder to get because so many tubes are plastic, I think Crest tubes still use this though. The material is similiar to the wine foil, thin, plyable and takes paint easily. Overall this is a really nice piece, your freehand is great and it doesn't look out of place on the model. I like the work you did on this piece.

I like the work you did on this piece. I'm not too worried about the banner, and I realize it didn't come out as nice as the rest. But, live an learn. I would have rebuilt it, but time is running too short to worry about it now. It's not a major competition like GenCon or anything, where I'll be judged against other entries; each is judged upon it's own merit, and is rewarded a bronze, silver, and gold medal. No cash prizes, nothing extraordinary. I have never entered anything like this, and I plan on hitting up the Adepticon next year, and the two entries I have done for this 'con are sort of for practice, so I get a feel as to what people are looking for, and so I can see other entries in person. Nothing is worse than painting in a vacuum. Thanks for the tip on banner material...not sure if I can find any metal toothpaste tubes anymore. But, I'll keep an eye peeled. As for the metals, I'm becoming enamored with NMM, and this will likely be the last competition piece I ever paint with them. NMM is just much easier to paint, although a bit more time-consuming. I'll probably only use metals for commission pieces, as they're much quicker to use, and get good results with. Thanks for the critique, and comments from everyone else. I like getting critiques, so feel free to let me have it!

Squid
Ghool, how did you transition the swirls over the shaded beige armor? Are all the swirls the same color, or did you change color and blend to get contrast with the colors underneath? This looks spectacular. Now paint something from Protectorate! :)
Ghool
I shaded all of the white first, then painted the designs in my mid-tone. I then went back in and shaded the undersides of the designs falling into shadow. It took a really long time. I don't have any clients that play Protectorate, actually. I have some Khador, and Trolls from a couple of my regulars, and a couple models I need to preview on Hand Cannon. Lock n' Load was a prosperous adventure, as I received two model pre-release to showcase on the site...I'm scrambling to get them up in the next two weeks, as one of them is gigantic, and the other is incredibly detailed, and tiny. fieldarchy
Ah yes! I remember seeing this guy in the painting contest. You did well for yourself. If you'd care to have my feedback here it is! The areas that you need to work on are freehand and metals a bit. The rest of it looked good, nice and smooth. My own personal taste I'd tell you to go for a bit more contrast. Don't be afraid to go a little darker with white if you want to create a more dramatic light effect. The metals, specifically the spear tip need some clean up work. In the first photo in particular it looks more like the shadow and highlight have been blocked out. I don't see a nice smooth transition from light to dark on the metals. Looks a bit dirtier than I'd care for this guy who is otherwise very pretty. The freehand is nice and you just need to tighten it up a bit more. Really, a little more time spent would do the trick. Freehand is a biatch and very time consuming. What you did looks really good. Just a little rough in some places. Keep painting! Hope to see more from you next year.
