MamaGeek
This one was really fun to paint, a lovely sculpt from Easternfront Studios. The mermaid is topless, so if you want to see the rest of her, you'll have to look on my website.
Jay
LOL! Great teaser. I would have made the seaweed a darker green for more contrast. Nicely painted!
cookjimjr
Very Nice, Front and Back, Great painting MG, but you do a real good job on everything, so it is what we come to expect. I am sure this took some time, with all ti detail work.
MamaGeek
Thanks, guys. It actually painted up faster than I expected. The skin took the bulk of the time, maybe 8 hours, plus maybe another 5-6 on the rest, although I wasn't keeping track, so I can't be sure. Wilwarin
Very.... green. It's a very nice paint job, however, I think it needs a bit more contrast to get the effect you're looking for, which is that ultimate focus on her. All of the greens seem too similar to each other, which, to my eye, makes the mini seem the same all around instead of the Mermaid being the main focus, which I think is what EFS is trying to convey in the sculpt (though I could be wrong... again, it's just my opinion). Nice work, though! She looks nice.
Dr.Bedlam
Brilliant work, as always.
Hot Lead
Very.... green. Nice work, though! She looks nice. I have to agree. I'll also add the value of the greens and the rocks are too similar. As a result the lighter skintones look like they're "floating" above a darer mass. Either lighten the tail (what I'd do) or darken the rocks (they're already reading like basalt as is...) Hot Lead
I do like the color choices and the scenic base you've created for her. Her face is well done, esp. the wet glint on her lips. I also like that you've pulled in some of the surrounding green into her fleshtones here and there - it helps tie her into the scene. On a different note, the contrasting colors of the sealife does the opposite - it helps break up the monotony of tones in the rest of the base. As I mentioned in my other post I had some issue with the similar values of the green and rocks. The other things which need some work are her nipples and abdomen. The dark center of her right-hand breast is off center, giving the effect that she's glancing off to the right and her nipples appear to be staring off to the left... The other thing that bothers me on her body is the highlighting on either side of her belly-button "slit". (The sculpt is not good here - it should be a small indentation, not a slit like Gael Goumon sculpted.) The highlighting on either side, straight up the abdomen to the sternum, isn't natural-looking. Any highlighting straight up the tummy should be no higher than the height of the "button". If you want more highlighting, I'd add an upside-down "U"-shaped highlight around the bottom edge of her rib-cage, as it runs over the top of the abdomen area. Take care, Laszlo
MamaGeek
Thank you, everyone, for the well-considered critiques! I think every mini I paint is a chance to learn and grow in my skills, and I appreciate you taking the time to comment. I'll take all of those things into consideration for the next time up! Bumble_B
I think it's a wonderful piece. I love how high you took the green highlights on the scales around her "knee" area. Well done! Thanks!
Jabberwocky
Lovely piece! I like the palette you chose for her--she'll be a great addition to the EFS showcase :).
Ishil
Definitely not a criticism of your painting, but why are so many mermaids drawn, or in this case sculpted, as though they have knees? It annoys me! Yes, I probably do think about these things too much. Ishil
JimL
Beautiful work, I like the color transition as she transitions to a fish.
bettagirl
Great paint job, and beautiful base too! My only question is... Is that the actual base she comes with, or did you build it yourself?
EasternFrontMick
Great job on the painting Joy.Cant wait to see her in person. bettagirl..the base is a prototype we added to the mermaid..we figured it suited the mermaid well.here is a link to the mini as she comes: http://www.easternfront-studios.net/wp-content/immagini/Fathoms%20deep/FDmetal/mermaid.jpg
