I've got to say I'm a bit perplexed on this one, Anne. The hair, gem, skin, cloak, and base are amazing, as usual. That cloak alone is a stunning work of art. However, right next to it is the loincloth/legging thing, which falls short of the rest of the piece. The free hand looks a bit rushed and the dark-lining is not smooth. It almost looks like someone other than you did that part.

I absolutely love 85% of this mini.

Very nicely done. I saw this in the Inspiration Gallery, and gave it a Thumbs Up!

Pros:

The gemstone looks very realistic, and is nicely eye-catching.

The freehand on the cloak is fantastic. It's a lovely pattern, and well-executed.

The edging on her skirt is also very nicely done, especially the horizontal edges done in gold NMM.

Her hair is very pretty. Black is hard to do right, and while it could be even brighter in places, it is overall very effective.

The base creates a very nice scene to place the figure.

Cons:

The rocks of the base look very flat; they could use more shading and highlighting, and additional colors to add interest to the dull gray.

Her skintones are also somewhat flat. The shading on her thigh is nice, but the rest of her skin could use similar coloring, and the contrast on all of it should be pulled up a notch.

The water flowing down the waterfall doesn't look completely natural. Some of the water is flowing at an angle, where it should be straight down.

Thanks for sharing, and keep up the good work!

Thanks for the good feedback guys, I appreciate it! ::): I think I'll give it another whack with the corrections tonight and reshoot tomorrow morning. It is indeed only me painting it :;): , I was rushing abit with the robe part, so I'll go back in and make the lining less apparent and work on the rest of the suggestions too. I have to admit the legs are sort of confusing as to what to leave in shadow and not. The waterfall was a bit problematic for me approach wise, and I know it looks a bit odd, I was mostly going off photo reference, 2-D translation over 3-D surface looks weird from some angles, maybe less white there.. I haven't tried actual water effects materials, so was just simulating with paint and gloss varnish for the moment. For sure the rocks can use more highlights too.

Also I think I'm going to start saving for a new camera, the one I'm using currently is an older Kodak one that doesn't have a white balance and I seem to have alot of focus issues with it, granted it's most likely me, but I reshot this figure this morning (to keep colors accurate, outdoors in indirect lighting) 9 times and still doesn't look too great :grr: . Ahhh photo insanity.. Hopefully I'll have something better tomorrow ::): !

The freehand on her cloak is from a Japanese print I have, and I would credit the artist but unfortunately I can't read Japanese. Anyhoo.. till tomorrow

Actually, I kinda like the dull/flat base. Too much color and highlight would take something away from the figure, in my opinion. Other than that...what she said biggrin.gif

Hi again, ok I reworked some of the problem areas, robe, skin, dark lining, odd leg, added some darker shadows and a little higher highlights to the rocky ground, messed around with the waterfall a touch, and added some lavendar to the crystal base. I'm afraid to go too light on the stone, since I like the dark frame around her, and also was already fighting the pale gold robe to keep attention on the face (eyes going to lightest points). Hope it looks a bit better ::): , thanks again for the crits!

Looked this up and I'm glad I scrolled down to see the updated. The lining around the skin, and the kneecap itself, looks much better then it did before. Personally, I do like the base, and the water fall effect you achieved here, though I didn't care for the blue sleeve for some reason. Perhaps if it were sheer, or highlighted up a bit. Not sure. See what you think.

I have to say this has some great free-hand though! It really takes this mini up to another level (especially that cloak). Would love to see more of it from you in your future works!
