Soxrobin
Well, I've been lurking around here for quite a while now, and I've finally decided to be brave and post something of my own on here. After sorting out what I felt were by best minis and taking them all outside to photograph, I ended up with exactly one that I had useable pictures of. (My kingdom for a manual focus camera!) I have a few Gnolls that are either painted or waiting to be painted, but rather than giving them the standard spotted hyena coat pattern, I decided that my particular Gnoll tribe would be based off of the striped hyena. No reason, really... I just liked the look. I apologize for posting a mini without a finished base, but right now my favorite minis are awaiting the day I don't completely fail at doing bases. Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated! -Sox
Mercius
Bang up job there...great color choices on the fur and very clean paintjob. You should show some more!
Castlebuilder
Sweeet! I really like a darker paint scheme. I really like it.
Thaelynne
I love those Gnolls and I think you did a great job on him. Nicely done. Keep practicing on those bases, and update this thread when you finally dare to base this one. :) I agree, do post more! Novice Tip, with the camera. There's a macro on most all cameras these days, and if it's still not focusing well, I don't zoom in very much, I'll depress the button enough so the auto focus kicks in, and then I'll move the camera closer to get to where the camera thought it was really focusing. See if that helps any. Good luck!
joshuaslater
I'm just going to heap some more praise on this one. Good choice on the color scheme and well executed!!
Ddot
The shoulder plates look a bit flat, but the rest of it is sweet. Nice details like the high-contrast stitches make the overall look stand out. Moar plz!!!
Jay
I like what you've done with this :) My only suggestion would be to change the color of his mane. It would add more contrast to the piece.
Arachne
I like that dark gritty "realistic" look, a lot. I'm right there with ya on the bases, too, I'll do a run of 4-5 minis and then go through and base them all, haha. Sometimes I can't stop the paint from flowing when I'm on a roll! Soxrobin
Wow, thanks for all the positive feedback! Instigator, I agree on the shoulder plates, but I'm not exactly sure what to do with them. Large, flat metallic areas are something I'm never sure what to do with. Jay, since I was trying to mimic an actual animal's markings, I'm not sure about changing the mane color for contrast. Though now that I looked up a picture again, maybe my fade to black on the mane shouldn't have been so gradual. Maybe a more sudden change would help with the contrast problem? Striped Hyena I'll try to post some more minis once I get this photography thing figured out. Thaelynne, I'll see if I can get that focus trick to work next time I have a good, sunny day. If I can't get the macro setting on my camera to cooperate, I'll see about borrowing my parents' camera... it has a macro setting and a super macro setting. Hopefully that will help. -Sox
Darius Glenwell
Careful with the primer as well. The paint looks a little bumpy. I have been told over and over to go darker with the shadows and lighter with the highlights. I like the darker tones you have, but I think the metals could use a bit more contrast. They look good and rusty but need some shiny areas as well. Same for the leather pouches. Good all around paint job. Now get that base finished! lol
