MamaGeek
You might consider darkening the outer part of his wings, so they are different from the underside. I would even have painted them to match his body, but even a coppery wash will add character, I think. I'm not sure if that fits your concept, though, so just think about it. Moderator TaleSpinner Posted October 11, 2011 Author Moderator Share Posted October 11, 2011 Thanks Derek and Joy. I did glaze the tunic with Rust Brown to bring it closer to the dragon's body (I'll post pictures soon). Joy, I see what you are saying on the wings, but I'm not sure it is what I want here. I'll think on it. Thanks for the advice. Andy
Moderator TaleSpinner Posted October 11, 2011 Author Moderator Share Posted October 11, 2011 Hours 12 through 13: Most of what I did these hours was the free hand on the lance, I finished the shaded metallics (though I may adjust them a bit yet), and then I glazed the tunic with Rust Brown as Derek suggested and then brought the highlights back up. I've been ill with something this week, and I'm not sure I remember how I did everything. The roses were all done using my new MSP HD paints. I like them a lot, though they are a bit different than the MSPs in the way they act on the model. I'll need a lot more experimentation with them before I full make up my mind on them. Tomorrow, I'll dark line everything and if there is time do the finial touch ups. I should have this mini done in the next couple of hours. Comments welcome and encouraged. MamaGeek
Beautiful roses, really lovely. My only comment would be that you prob should have shaded the lance more before painting them, but the freehand itself is fantastic. I can't wait to see it all done! Yeah, my camera doesn't like light colors. It really is shaded more in RL and I hate exagerating things just for a picture, especially if I am not painting for an internet comp. Moderator TaleSpinner Posted October 13, 2011 Author Moderator Share Posted October 13, 2011 Hours 15 and 16: The painting is done. I still have to apply a woodland base to it. The last two hours were mostly spent touching up, dark lining, touching up again, and adding a few more top level highlights to his hair and the dragon's horns. So now for Jabberwocky's favorite part, the nitpicking. Please don't be shy; give me both barrels. I'll likely keep him on the base at least until the weekend as I have a sculpting project I have to get to now, so let me have it so I can add your comments to the mini next week. Thanks, Andy
Jabberwocky
Did someone call my name? Ahh, yes... Let me see... First off, (as always) I want to say that I've thoroughly enjoyed watching this one progress. I really liked watching the beholder come along, but your paint jobs always inspire. I very much like the green eyes on Glitter; it really draws my eye to the face. The freehand is spot on and is probably my favorite part of the piece--it's crisp and darklined well. You know I like nothing better than a well done darkline! The ivory to green fade on the wings looks cool and ties in with the rest of the model well. As for nitpicks, I have a few (although I suspect some of this may be photography related as much if not more than painting related). The shaft of the lance looks flat, especially compared to the wonderful freehand adorning it. You had mentioned that it was a photography issue in one of the earlier posts, but I do think you could shade the underside a bit more. The head of the lance also looks a bit off to me. You have a good range of dark to bright, but I think it would sell "metallic" more if you place the darks and brights close together. The top and bottom part of the blade looks great in the second pic. I think reversing the shading and highlighting on the flat part of the blade would be more convincing--Derek's version shows this very well. http://www.reapermini.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=38952 Obviously, this isn't really independent critique; I am simply suggesting what I like based on Derek's placement of his highlights and shading. The dragonskin is well done, but IMHO could go a bit deeper with the shading. I wonder if this is again a function of the camera causing things to be a bit washed out. The horns and claws could use another highlight as well; I think they would reflect light more brightly, especially on the wing claws and horns on the head. The harness around the chest of Glitter could also use a very thin edge highlight to give it a touch more pop and separate it from the lower edge. All in all a great job as always! Even moreso when I saw how small this is compared to what I had imagined. There's both barrels, Andy. Take 'em as you wish!
Warlady
Love the roses on the lance - what a great idea and beautifully done. I also like how everything ties in together on your color scheme. The picture from behind really shows the green of his cloak blending with the green on the wings. I've looked at this model numerous times (after all, one can never have too many dragons), and I think I will have to go get it now, after watching your WIP. Gorgeous job and thanks for sharing! Moderator TaleSpinner Posted October 25, 2011 Author Moderator Share Posted October 25, 2011 Well, I got done with the sculpt I've been working on and had today to fix up all of Jabs nits since I don't have the armature finished for the next sculpt yet. I focused mostly on the lance point and the shading on the lance. I also brought up the highlights and used a teal glaze in the shadows on the dragon's skin. I doubt I'll post anymore WIP shots. I'll likely just base it and finish it off when I can find time. I've got one more sculpt to get done in the next couple of weeks, so I may not have time to finish this until that is done.
