Anne, thank you! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I was fortunate enough to pick the Darksword Miniature's DVD this weekend - the one with Anne and Jen - and I've been enjoying it quite a bit. Other than no 'play all' feature, the DVDs are great - packed full of lots of helpful tips and instruction. I'd highly recommend it - and I'm looking forward to finishing up the third disc soon.

But I wanted to give Anne a special shoutout for her module on Color Theory. It covered most of what I needed to learn about color theory, something I asked the Reaper painters about a couple months ago here to cover in a 'how-to'. It was a great, concise, yet in-depth explanation of the 'why' of color theory, and it's probably the most helpful module that I've seen in the video so far. (Not to take anything away from Jen - her cloth tutorial on sheer fabrics is terrific, too. :poke: ) Oh, and to find out that Derek paints a rough painting of his models before he paints the figure to check for color harmony? Wow.

So, if you haven't seen this set yet, I'd highly recommend it.

(And now I have painter's envy, too. If only I could meet weekly for painting tips with painters like Jen and Anne. But alas, I live in California.)

My 2 yen,

You're welcome!!

Dark Sword Jim: "You have twenty minutes. Can you cover color theory in twenty minutes?"

Me: "I guess we'll find out!!"

I'm glad that it made sense--we shot that all in one take, and I had notes, no script. Sometimes you just hope the Anne-Babble all comes out okay! :;):

While trying to fight off this darn cold, I've worked through a good part of the first DVD this weekend. I'm not a beginner nor am I a competition level painter, and I've certainly learned a few tips and will certainly recommend the DVDs to others.

Overall, the DVDs have very good content organized into 10-20 minute topic based chunks (which makes the content easily consumable). Unlike what I've heard of the first CMON DVD, much of the content is based around what Anne and Jen say. They are certainly demonstrating techniques, but you aren't just watching them paint while listening to music.

My only complaint so far has been that sometimes, the camera gets focused on the wrong thing and it takes a little while before the videographer seems to realize the poor focus and shifts the focal point.

As a side note, the videos transfer very well to an iPad. ::):

Man I have been waiting almost three weeks now for mine to arrive. Ordered it as soon as DS released it on their website. I have to say I like Reapers sales procedure better. They at least keep you informed on the progress of your order. Aside from a automatic thank you for your payment email I have no idea when it made it into the mail and have had no response to my email from last week on just asking for an update as to when it was processed so I could estimate the arrival time.

Takes about 17 days for my reaper orders to arrive from when I am informed of shipping. So I would recommend ordering through Reaper if you want the DVD just for the superior customer service. I so want to see this DVD. Patience is not one of my virtues.

Wow, Gareson, tell your wife her first minis ROCK! Very nice for starting work! I'm glad our DVD got her interested in the hobby. ::):

Maxstyles, Color Theory is what I kind of have a rep for teaching...have taught many classes at Gen Con and ReaperCon over the years on that. ::): I suppose it would be possible to put out an entire DVD if you also combined Color Mixing (my latest class, which has a lot to do with color theory). So, a DVD on Color Theory and Color Mixing. That might work.

Of course, I think that Dark Sword Jim is still recovering from doing the first DVD...but Ed keeps saying that Reaper is very close to creating their own. So maybe I'll pitch him on that idea. :;):
