My Dog Zoe

Several of you at one time or another here in the Rochester area had been to my home in years past.

You were greeted by a furry four-legged canine friend named Zoe. I thought it only fair to let those of you who remembered her know what had happened.

Today we had to put her down. She was diagnosed with liver cancer yesterday morning, and it spread quickly. By this morning she was drooling, bloating, and was in pain and not eating. We did what was best. She was my best friend. I'll forever love her and miss her.

Rest Peacefully my loveable wiggly fuzzbucket Zoe. 6/8/1999-9/15/2011

I'm at a bit of a dilemma here. Mom and I want another dog. However Dad is against it. He cites not wanting to go through losing a dog again as his biggest reason. We found Zoe at the shelter 12 years ago last month, it seems only fitting to find our next dog at the shelter as well. Is it selfish of Mom and I to want another dog? We just want another fuzzie to love. The wounds are to fresh right now to consider getting another dog right away, but we do want one.

The only thing we have going for us is that Dad is a complete sucker for a pair of brown puppy dog eyes that are begging to be taken home. Maybe in time he will come around.

Very sorry to hear about Zoe. I've been there too; it hurts. Glad you can talk about it to help yourself cope.

As for another dog: You're not just being selfish. There are a lot of shelter dogs who'll never find a home. Adopt one, and you get a loving pup, but the dog gets a loving family for the rest of its life.

So true. Through my main job I have access to people who run rescue shelters or regularly foster rescue dogs as well, so I will keep my eyes and ears open to see what they have available as well.

We don't plan on getting another dog right now. We want one, we're just waiting for Dad to be ready. He will be the deciding factor in this as to the how and when. Right now he is very adamant about not getting another one. Maybe time will help that out a bit.

When we lost our beloved 10 year old yellow Lab 'Sandia' in Nov 2006 to Cushing's disease, I told my wife and kids I wanted to wait at least a year before getting another dog. Within 6 months, we had added new yellow Lab pup 'Heidi' to our family. The emptiness in the house had just become unbearable, even for me!

My sympathies on your loss, Enchantra. I hope you & your family get the the same point we were at when we realized that as bad as the loss of the pet is, the years of happiness a pet can provide are worth it.
