MiniCannuck
Thanks Qwyksilver. I will get my minis in order before the trip. Speaking of trip, my plane arrives around 3:10 on Wednesday. If anyone needs a ride, just pm me and let e know.
Jen
How fast do the painting classes usually fill up? I'd hate to make hotel and flight reservations, only to not get in to the events I'm interested in because I was at work for 6 hours after event registration became available. :\ I know they leave some seats open for sign-ups at the con, but I'm not really keen on flying out and hoping to get a spot 'live', either. MiniCannuck
When does registration open?
haldir
Soon (sorry running joke here on the boards) Seriously thou, Reaper still has to finalize what the classes will be, who will be teaching & other stuff that goes on for the Con. I'd give it at least till March before you see any official 2012 ReaperCon stuff on the site. Jen Reaper generally gives a good heads up when the classes will be posted. Also they are taught multiple times over the weekend, unless its something special like a dragon painting class. Also last year there was quite a bit of open slots per class. As long as you got there early in the day say 9 am, you were able to get your class. Mind you more popular ones do fill up quicker then others. Just keep that in mind. Artists Wren Posted January 18, 2012 Artists Share Posted January 18, 2012 I think they leave two spots open per class to be purchased at the con. Those do not go on sale until the morning of the day the class is on, so it is also not the case that someone can come early Thursday and just grab all the at-con spots. Preorder tickets didn't seem to get snapped up quite as quickly last year as I've seen them go in some previous years. Also the instructors are available in the artist area outside of class times. While we can't re-teach an entire class, we are available to spend a little bit of time with you talking about a particular technique or looking over your minis with you. Dodson
I'll be attending again. I had a ton of fun at my first ReaperCon last year.
MiniCannuck
awesome. I'm really looking forward to the classes. I like the DVDs I found at GenCon but it would be great to have an actual workshop with the artists. Should I be bringing my brushes, paint and tools with me or is anything supplied to use? Either way, I will bring my brushes. I find it weird using other brushes when I get used to my stuff.
Artists Wren Posted January 18, 2012 Artists Share Posted January 18, 2012 Definitely bring your own brushes, and any other tools you use frequently. Paints will be provided in classes, and are also available in the open painting area for you to use. (Though if you have one or two non-Reaper paints you can't live without, you will have to bring those.) Usually plates (for palettes) and paper towel are available for use in the free paint area (and they are definitely provided in classes), but if you have a particular palette you like to use, I'd bring that, too. (And you can use and reuse sponges instead of paper towels to save trees! It's also probably nicer on your brush.) Extra lights are provided in classes. They are not in the open paint area, but I don't know if there are plugs available if you do bring your own. The other thing to bring to classes or if you want to stop by the artist table for feedback is minis that you've worked on. It's not required at all, but if you want feedback on specific stuff, it's helpful to us to see other stuff you've done. For air travel, put all weird or pointy tools and putties and such into your checked luggage to minimize problems. You can carry on small bottles of paint if everything you want to bring fits into the quart bag requirement. I would definitely carry-on painted miniatures. If you don't have a specialized miniature carry case, or what you have is too large for the number of minis you're bringing, I've carried mine on wrapped in bubble wrap in small hard-sided plastic containers like pencil boxes and the like. If I don't see you in a class MiniCannuck, I hope you'll come by the artist area and say hi. I'm a Canadian living in the US, and I enjoy hearing a voice from my former home now and then. :->
MiniCannuck
Thanks so much for the advice. I will bring my minis on the plane with me. I definitely will be taking some classes. This is the main reason I decided to come. I can't wait to meet some of the artists that I have been following on the net. Their work really inspires me to get better! So, you are Canadian? I will have to bring down some treats for you. Anything you've missed? Coffee Crisp? Smarties? Ketchup potato chips? Name it and I'll do my best to accommodate :)
Artists Wren Posted January 19, 2012 Artists Share Posted January 19, 2012 I'd love a Cherry Blossom, but last time my Mom tried to find them they weren't on sale anywhere she could find, though apparently they still sell them in the Maritimes. There are actually companies the import Canadian candy bars (and a few other things like KD and some chips) to sell in the US, but you have to buy a carton or half carton. (Weird bonus facts - Canadians have the highest per capita consumption of Kraft Mac & Cheese, and our Special K is different than the US version.) So I have alternatives if your bags are full. If you do have a bit of space, a Coffee Crisp would be great! See you in not very long at all!
MiniCannuck
consider it done Wren. I totally remember the cherry blossoms and the sugar comas that came with them! I'm sure I'll be able to find some. They are definitely in the Maritimes at the very least. I have trucks that go down there and I can get some sent back. I did the same for a friend I met on the GenCon website who wanted Lime and Pineapple Crush. I knew about your weird facts. Even weirder is that I have never had either product (at least the Kraft versions). My brother loves it but I couldn't stand the smell. I will make room for a care package from Canada. MiniCannuck
Hey Wren, Cherry Blossoms secured and in the freezer! I have a question about the auction on Sunday. I read what I could find online. Should I bring my swag points from my blister packs? I read that you could trade these in for auction dollars but it was a pretty old post and I wasn't sure if this still happens. BTW, what do they auction on that day? I can't wait for this convention. Good thing that I have Cold Wars in March to help pass the time! Heisler
I'll try and pin something down on your question about the auction. Since the swag points were discontinued last year I'm pretty sure that you won't be allowed to turn them in for Reaper Bucks for the auction this year, but I will check. I never know what is going to be in the auction until I get there. It generally will consist of various Reaper Products (including the occasional limited run mini), banners, paints, and various other misc items that you can get from cafe press. The auction is probably my favorite part of the whole show but then again its when I get to be the center of attention.
Artists Wren Posted January 23, 2012 Artists Share Posted January 23, 2012 Thanks MiniCannuck, you're awesome! If you're not familiar with Cafe Press items, it's stuff like tote bags, blankets, clocks, iPhone covers and other such items with Talin art or book cover art on them. Last year there were also some autographed Pathfinder books. One of the artists (Jubilee) put in some goody bags of basing materials last year, and I was thinking of putting a couple together for this year. Even if the swag points are no longer valid, you will earn auction bucks by attending classes and participating in games and events at the Con. So the more fun you have, the more bucks you get! haldir
As one person that got 1 of the Pathfinder books, all I can say is the auction is worth it!! Fun time as well. (mental note, gotta bring that book this year so I can get Patrick to sign it!!)
