MiniCannuck Posted January 15, 2012 Share Posted January 15, 2012 Hi, Our group is new to Warlord. Some of us played the dragon game at GenCon and had a great time. The game master and his assistant were great guys who went out of their way to teach the rules and made sure everyone had fun. We were so impressed that all three of my group went from that game to the Reaper booth and bought starter armies. Again, great people - especially the odd little fellow with the hat! He was so good that he got our other friend who didn't even play get am army too! I got the Isenstead army. My question is whether people care if you place the figure on a slightly larger base for aesthetic reasons? I'm still using the size rules from the book but some figures just don't look right on the base size given in the book. I don't want to cheat or give myself an unfair advantage. Is there any reason that making the base a little bigger but still using the size chart in the book would do this? I'm coming down to ReaperCon for the first time this year and dont want a situation where my army breaks the rules. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Shakandara Posted January 15, 2012 Share Posted January 15, 2012 If you plan to play your army in an official tournament (i.e. ReaperCon), then your models will need to be on the official base-size listed for them in the book. Shakandra answered your question dead on target. For official games, you need to correct sized bases. Most of my models are fine on the base size that the rules say. It is just a couple of the frost giants that kinda look silly on the bases. If I decide to play in the tournament, I will make sure I get the base sizes right! The other reason I was asking is to find out if there are any rules we should watch out for that give a larger base figure an advantage. If there are, I need to correct this as I don't want to cheat. If so, thanks for the introduction to the game. My gaming group is having a great time with the system. It really fills the niche of fantasy skirmish games. Shakandara Posted January 16, 2012 Share Posted January 16, 2012 Often in scenarios game, larger-size models have have advantages in taking objectives (their base-size often counts for more "base-contacts", and they can physically block more on an objective due to the larger base), carrying items (larger models are usually give the ability to carrying more/larger items), etc. There are also downsides to being on a bigger base; it is easier to put a larger number of attackers on a larger base model when swarming, larger sized models are more easily targeted by spells and ranged attacks, as LOS is almost always present, among other items. As Tim suggests, most people in a friendly game won't care if your models aren't based 100% correctly, but if you plan to use them for any official play, you might as well base them on the size they need to be on. There are few things more annoying in miniatures than having a nice painted miniature on the wrong shape/size base, rendering it useless for gaming. I've got some beautifully painted Warlord models that I had done before I started playing the game, and had them based however I felt like at the moment. I grumble at those miniatures every time I go to play and see the 2 dozen or so figures on 30mm rounds, custom bases, etc. Grr. Exactly what figure(s) from giants are you having issues with? I have all 4 of the giant models (Boerogg, Svetlana, Warriors, and Spearmen) based on 40mm bases without issue. Granted, if I were planning to use them only for D&D, I'd have based them all on 50's, but it isn't like my giants don't fit or are falling over because they are unstable on 40's. ~v Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

None of my models are unstable but Boeragg just doesn't look right on the base size he is given. It is like a fat person in spandex. Sure, they can fit inside but odds are that things are overflowing around the edges. However, I will take you advice and base the guys on the right sized bases. When we play, we refer to the listed base size for determining effects in the game. I guess the only thing that would affect us right now would be more models getting around them and blocking lines when we come up with scenarios. Speaking of scearios, does anyone know if there will be further rule supplements coming out with seige rules or scenario packs? We are going to adapt some of the Malifaux rules for in house games but it would be great if there was a resource to add to the game. Thanks again for your help! And being one of the guys working the booth I'm curious which one of us helped you. I think I was the only one that wore a hat consistently, but little is not something I've been called in a long time. I use them as proxies for giant warriors. Also I don't care much for Deathsleet, so I used Stormwing as my proxy. It is just the hobby side of me that wants me to put them on a base where I can add some snow and bits of rock to show them off as best I can. This is so I can use my GW and Chainmail stuff to play Warlord. WOOT my 1000 post! On a Warlord topic no less.
