Bones You'd Like To See

I'd like to see a few Chronoscope minis in the translucent plastic to represent characters with cloaking devices/invisibility powers

This is of particular interest to me because, at present, making figures in translucent material is something I just CANNOT do, even if I'm willing to sculpt and mold and cast myself. (Not practically, anyway. I've experimented with clear resin casting, with moderate success, but the stuff I've used gets an ugly yellow tint, and KILLS molds.)

Cast a figure in translucent plastic, and if you want him to NOT be translucent ... just paint it! Presto! =D

I've got the "Opti-Camo" set from the Sedition Wars Kickstarter, and I'm thinking of selectively painting the face areas and certain other details, leaving the armor surfaces translucent, to try to get across the idea of "active camouflage" built into armor that doesn't just magically camouflage exposed skin as well. (Part of my rationale for this is that when I've got all my Opti-Camo minis sprawled out ... I can't really tell what is what at a glance since, after all, they're all clear plastic. ;D )

I suppose the balancing factor is going to be, "Are people willing to PAY MORE for a translucent/transparent SKU of this model?" I imagine the translucent/transparent stuff has some sort of trade-off (more expensive, less paint-friendly, less pliable, the lack of the claim to "you don't even need to prime it" if it's no longer base-coat white) compared to the regular Bones material, or we'd see a lot more of it for the sheer novelty.

Here's one wish I have for future Bones that isn't tied to any particular FIGURE per se:

* Fewer broccoli bases. More ... just about anything else.

Broccoli bases just don't look like much of anything. If I glue the figure down on another base (a 25mm round for certain sci-fi minis games, a 30mm round for certain others, or a 20/25mm square for certain fantasy games), the broccoli base looks like this irregular lump that's out of place, and I'll almost certainly have to trim it, or use some putty to try to blend it in.

On the other hand, if the character were standing on a pile of rocks (and I don't even care if the SAME PILE OF ROCKS gets recycled again and again), or one of those "shale" segments, that's the sort of thing that I could incorporate into a base easily -- or if it's just left self-standing, it'd probably be a lot more interesting to paint up.

This is particularly the case for the Chronoscope minis, as I KNOW they were originally on slotted bases, yet the KS Chronoscope minis were all shown on broccoli bases -- IMEF troopers, NOVA corps, zombie-apoc survivors, wild west cowboys, etc. -- they're all standing on little lumpy mounds of whatever it is that the "broccoli base" is supposed to represent. It would've been awesome if there were some of piece of "sci-fi floor deck" segment the sci-fi characters could be posed on, for instance. For other characters, I'm sure there are other segments that could work: a piece of wreckage here, some rocks there, or some wooden planks or something "steampunky" as appropriate.

I REALLY like the bases of the Bones fantasy figures that have the non-broccoli bases -- the "dungeon attack" figures on little flagstone bases, the wizard with a cluster of stones and items on his base, and especially the dragonslayer with a DRAGON HEAD on the base. :D THAT stands out to me as a great example of what could be done.

That sort of detail really adds interest to a figure -- and if for some reason I really, really didn't want it there, the wonderful thing about Bones is that it's pretty easy for me to trim it off. Of course, I can do that with the broccoli bases now, but while I can see saving a rock-pile or dragon-head base in my "bitz box" for a later conversion or bit of base decoration, I just can't imagine too many people saving up those broccoli lumps.

Of course, hey, I'll be quite happy with my Bones-priced NOVA and IMEF troopers whether they're standing on broccoli or wreckage or whatever; as I said, one of the wonderful things about Bones is how easy it is to trim and re-base. I'm just noting that for FUTURE expansion, a little more visual interest in the base is a nice plus when I'm considering picking up a figure.

So I was looking for pictures of the Warlord Frost Giants in the store today because I wanted to look at their heads and I discovered a little something.

Frost Giant Warrior, Frost Giant Spearmen, and Ice Warrior (its an ice elemental) are all P65 only models, so they should be getting the Bones treatment soon. (Hopefully the Frost Giant Warrior gets a new head.)

I would love to see some models for the city watch. Maybe a dashing captain and several not-so-perfect guards - including a smaller and a bigger (beer belly? :)) guy.

And some ladies. And a dwarf.
