Norman SAGA Army - 6 Points

Recommended Posts

I have been working on this over the course of five weeks. I have had to fit it in between work, school and family. Its been a little tough and stretched out farther than I wanted it too. For those of you that are curious SAGA is a new set of Dark Age rules from Gripping Beast. The make use of an interesting concept known as the battle board. You roll saga dice at the beginning of your turn and place them on the board in order to activate units or "special" abilities. On the surface the four initial armies look very much the same, but their capabilities on the battle board make them very unique.

Here are a couple of pictures of the in progress work. You can find more pictures in my blog (as well as darn near the entire WIP): http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com

Really like GB's Normans, I have an army of these guys too (which was missing for some time, but I recently "re-found" in the basement!), though mine is for WAB and has enough figures for 2 SAGA armies, I'd think. Right now they're one of the best Norman lines on the market. The only thing I don't like about them is that their scabbards are empty; I know this is for people that want to equip their figures with swords rather than spears, but cutting and gluing on sword hilts is a PitA...

Are you sure they are GB then? Of the 13 mounted knights I painted I didn't have that problem at all. If the knight is equipped with a spear then there is a sword in the scabbard, anyone that is carrying a sword has an empty scabbard. All the spears and swords are separate pieces so no conversion work is necessary. GB is very good for the price but when I buy by Norman army I'll be going with either Perry Miniatures or Crusade Miniatures.

I don't remember if I had to do that with the mtd knights, but definitely had to do it with the foot. The bulk of my figures were actually bought from OG15s, which had the license to cast GB minis in the US.

I've "rebooted" my Norman armies several times. One of which was with Crusader minis. I eventually abandoned them, because a) they don't rank up if you use realistic spear lenghts, and b) equipment was way too homogenous in a time when equipment was privately purchased -- most helmets FREX were conical, either smooth or with reinforcing bands/spangenhelms. No ridged helmets at all, or 4-piece riveted spangenhelms without reinforcing bands (GB has a few of these). Although I'm a big fan of Mark Sims, I eventually gave this range a pass after forming some infantry...

I see, that will probably push me all the way the fence to the Perry's then. A bit more expensive but I think very much worth the price. Since I'm using these for SAGA the ability to get figures to rank up isn't even a vague requirement. I'll have to go back to the website though and take a closer look at the helmets, I haven't been paying as much attention to the details like that, more to the overall impression of the force.

i like, i like...

the Local Club is thinking of going SAGA, and i have no problem w/ custom dice or new mechanics....

my Question is: should i do Normans or Vikings? i like armor, but i also like fast and hard hitting.

and yes, though a Gripping Beast game i will seek the Perry's mini's...unless...

Its tough, I would recommend not reading the rules as such to make that decision but taking a close look at the battle board for the vikings and the one for the normans as this is where the real personality of each army comes out. Personally I'll probably do both and maybe a couple of others just because the size of the armies is pretty small.

I also got these normans back form the client because he decided he didn't like the game and didn't want to pay for them, so I guess I'll use them to fund my Perry Norman army or my Crusader/Artizan Viking army.
