Just like riding a bike...

Got in two games between Thursday and now: our usual Thursday match and one over Free RPG day.

Thursday left me seriously considering that one of us was unknowingly using loaded dice. After Moandain rolled a 2 out of a needed 3 to kill Kassandra with Ice Beam the game took a turn for the decidedly worse. Don't get me wrong: I've had games go south before, but this was a train-wreck. I never rolled higher than a 4 for the rest of the game (while she's rolling 7's at least)

Second game went a lot better. This time I really only lost on points. Watching Dauron cleave his way through Kassandra, some Bladesisters, and an Angel before going down was the highlight of my morning...even if I still can't kill Shaedra...

Is it normal for a model to make 6 out of 6 Tough checks over two games?

Next up: 1500 points. Probably Overlords.

That damnable Army Creator over at Reaper Games has me sold on two more factions. I started in first edition with Darkspawn, but now I just ordered my All tentacle/Bathalian force, and last month it was two units of Overlords.

I'm lucky I bought so many models almost ten years going now that I can just splash the pot with a few more and have a whole force.

We've seen crazy games where a model will make 4 or 5 tough checks. Sorry your dice went south. Smash one to show the others what will happen with continued failure.

Going to 1500???

1,000 point games are fun and all, but I prefer a bigger game. However, don't feel like you need to automatically make the jump up to 1,500. 1,250 points can add in that extra solo or flesh out some smaller troops quite easily. A lot of times you aren't really adding too many cards to the Init deck (if at all) but are instead fielding larger troops on the field. That can slow the game down as well, just from the sheer number of models, but if everyone knows the stats of their models, then it doesn't take long to breeze through a melee. ^_^

Is the table bigger or smaller than 4x4? Bigger would definitely skew things. The longer it takes to get into bashing range is more time to get peppered with arrows...or various sundry explosives.

In my incredibly humble (and completely 100% correct ) opinion, up to 1,500 point games can be played on a 4x4 table. Now, the caveat is that you have a 12" deep deployment zone that goes 4' wide. I always use this in a standard Kill 'Em All game. Why bother otherwise? But, if you get any bigger than 1,500 points then the armies are definitely going to get unwieldy (barring some really strange army design requirements that are agreed to beforehand. Whew. That was long!) on that small of a table. You still stick with 4' across, but can go to 6' wide.

A couple of years ago, Warwick, Stubbdog and Not Sure teamed up against me in a 3,000 point battle. I believe we were on a 4'x8' table then. But, each of them had 1,000 points each and I was fielding a coherent 3,000 point Dwarf list. I lost because Warwick's stupid Merc Ronin wouldn't stop Cleaving my Bear Riders. :grr: But, that's ok. We had a blast. ::):

Well that was fun. Closest game we've had in a while, at least until my luck abandoned me in the last round. How does Ymrilix the False not score more than a single hit in 2 rounds of combat? How?

But I'm starting to sound like a broken record here...

I had Arik, Ashkrypt, Balthon, and Ranthe all in one army. Balthon is the only one that didn't really pull his weight, but that was more a problem with my maneuvering than anything. He just ended up hanging back out of the fight until right near the end. I think I'll switch him out for Stratch next time. I've been wanting to try him out. Arik and Ashkrypt had loads of fun throwing fireballs around, killed a number of Sisters that way. Took down Kyra and Lavawrath...the first time, anyway. Then it got brought back on the last turn and things started going south real quick.

Think I'll probably go Nefsokar next. They haven't been used in an over 500 point game yet.

My work schedule has changed a bit so I havent been able to roll dice since RCon. But, I will get to fairly soon and then I will be sure to post some recounts as well.

I feel your pain. I'm half moved from my house into my girl's house, and still have to clean it all out and put it on the market. Real life can really put a damper on our gaming.

Whew...been a while. Heat's been keeping us away from our weekly games (minis inside a car for 8+ hours in 100+ degree heat? bad idea).

Threw a 1500 point Nefsokar list to try out some of the cavalry. I find myself very underwhelmed with Senet Net'Merew. Which is sad, she's my favorite Nef warlord. Constantly forgetting that Swift Attack is Charge, then Move didn't help. Giant Scorpion also underperformed, sadly.

Khadath with a Prophet and Tomb Guard, however, rocked. Part Death's River is a brutal trick.

I definitely need to refine this list some more. Way too much cavalry, not enough meat. Maybe switch out Senet for either her brother or Anwar and Khadath for Khufu. Drop the Scorpion, keep the Avatar .

On a side note: my Necropolis is overflowing the cake pan I store them all in, and what do I see hitting the store?

Bones...Zombies...

...I'm sure I can cram a few more models in there...maybe...

Oh, and a minotaur too?

...well, I just bought the Legendary Encounters one...but I think I can make another fit...

If you are struggling with Senet and the Nef Cavalry, you might want to take a look at my post in the Nefsokar tactics thread. They can deliver an absolute beat-down when used properly. At 1500 points, there should easily be enough points to add some more "meat" to the list (Ammat and some Devourers would be a good example).

I almost won for the first time the other night!! I'm getting better, very slowly. It feels like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football when I first learn the game. I need about twenty games to get the hang of the rules enough to win. Sigh.

Lesson learned: Have Greka cast the Iron Skin spell on Varaug. Mwahahahaha!

I always learn more in defeat than in victory. Losing gives you the opportunity to examine your list and tactics for errors, and figure out where your opponent got the edge on you.

If you were in my shoes Shak, you'd have a doctorate by now!!!

Again, this game rocks. When you learn a wargame as slowly as I do, and lose your first fifteen games, the sweetness of the first victory is unparallelled. I haven't been discouraged, only more eager to play.

Well, at one point, I pretty much was in your shoes. To this day, I do not consider myself a wargamer. I'm a RPGer that just happens to play Warlord. :;):

When I first started out, I lost as much as I won. When I went to my first RCon, I got schooled by the top-ranked player in the region. Those beatings taught me to be a better player, but I've honestly made little progress in the last several years.
