Occullus, The Eye Beast Hour by Hour WIP

Wouldn't that be better if its front right eye stalk would come out from under the top front scale? All the eye stalks seems to come out from under the top scales but this one is passing through the scale.

It was a decision I made when sculpting. It is what it is now I can't change the molds. If people don't like it the way it is, it won't be a tough conversion.

Hours 13 and 14:

post-140-0-19210900-1341414084.jpg

These hours I painted the eye balls of all the stalks in browns and then added Muddy Dirt over it as the base for the iris.

I then finished one eye last hour. The iris is a myriad of purple, indigo, and olive greens. The pupil is Blue Liner and the reflection dot is Ghost White. I then did the inner membranes in the indigo purples triad in five shades with a blend of Pale Indigo and ghost white for the highest highlight. I did the claws in the Bone triad with the highest highlight in Leather White. Then I lined them with Brown Liner. Anyway, I just wanted to get one done before moving on to the others to get your opinion and see how it looks. Each one is a lot of work and I wanted to be sure of my design first, so don't be shy.

Have a great 4th!

I think they look great! The eye itself is once again superb! Also, the bright flash of color that the indigo gives the model is very important, I think, and I like it. But I'm also a tad concerned that the brighter bluish color might draw a little too much attention away from the main body of the beast and up to the eye stalks. Of course, I'm no color theory expert, so take this with a grain of salt.

I tend to agree about the blue shade on the inner membranes. I would think a purples-to-pinkish would be less distracting. Unless you did each one a different color, since each eye stalk has a different power, but I'm not sure I like that idea...

I just found a website on an unrelated google search, I am loving this site. I think Froggy has some competition on the cool conversions after seeing this site. Anyway, one of the pictures was of a pretty cool eye beast repaint. I thought you might be interested in seeing his take on the eyes. I think it could work with yours too, at least your eye stalks...

Hour 14.5:

post-140-0-04624400-1342148330.jpg

Man I've been swamped lately. I finally got something done on this guy.

Stubbdog, I really like your concept of the gem eyes; I might do that on the next version of this guy, but for now I'm going to stick with traditional since its for my friend. I did decide to go with Joy's idea and do the light color with blood vessels. I based it in Faded Purple, then highlighted with Stained Ivory, Yellowed Bone, and Creamy Ivory. Next, I free-handed the vessels in Blood Red and glazed over that with a few coats of Ghost Purple.

Whatcha think?

Andy

PS: the membranes actually look better in RL. The light color made washed out the vessel in the photo.

This is the kind of stuff that I find awe-inspiring and almost disheartening. This is so fantastic I could never dream of being this good. Well done!

Thanks. Honestly, it wasn't that long ago that I was perusing these boards thinking the same thing (still do whenever I look at Derek's and Joy's work; well, maybe now I dream of it, but know I won't likely ever get there now that I've shifted my emphasis to sculpting).

Don't lose heart though, just try to challenge yourself and try/improve one thing/technique each time you paint a mini. You'll be amazed at how fast you get good. Also, be brutally honest with yourself about your workl; be your own harshest critic. (I honestly haven't seen your painting though either, so you may already be quite good.)

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I'm hoping to get a couple of hours in tonight. I doubt I'll post more pictures though until I have all the eyes done. I'm wondering just how many eyes I can paint in two hours. I think I'll be burnt-out on eyes by the time I'm done painting this guy.
