Moderator TaleSpinner Posted July 17, 2012 Author Moderator Share Posted July 17, 2012 My son and I spent about an hour and a half painting together last night. I really like that he's getting into this seriously now. After years of painting in solitude, it's fun to have someone to paint with. We had a blast last night, though he spent a lot of it dissing my choice of 60's-70's classic rock music. But hey, it's my studio and my iPod and dock; I get to set the Pandora station. Anyway, between last night and my hour session at lunch today, I finished all of the eyeballs. I'm going to do the membranes and claws tomorrow. My goal is to have the mini fully completed by the end of the week. If I get the membranes done tomorrow, I'll try to get another pictoral update posted tomorrow night. Moderator TaleSpinner Posted July 19, 2012 Author Moderator Share Posted July 19, 2012 Hours 14.5 through 17: I finished the eyes. I think i already covered how, so I won't bore you again with that. All that is left now is the belly, the base, and some touch-ups like adding some red glazes to the mouth and smoothing a few transitions that are bugging me.I probably have about three hours left at most. I'm still not certain how I'm going to dress the base. Have a good night, Andy

DixonGrfx
Andy, I love this guy. I will have one of my own when Troll Forged releases him. I love your paint too. Very cool. In these latest pics, the composition is too uniform. At first my initial reaction was that all your colors were too uniform, but that's wrong. After considering, I think your background to too close to the colors you picked and your model seems to have lost his "pop". It's got to be it. When you post your next pics, could you try a different background color? I think it may better showcase your exceptional talent. When I look at the pics, they seem to lack depth. It could be the background. The other possibility is that the colors may be too close in value. Can you deepen the shadows? That would help bring back some depth to the beast. I am being nit picky. He is amazing as is, for sure.
Moderator TaleSpinner Posted July 19, 2012 Author Moderator Share Posted July 19, 2012 Thanks all. @DixonGrfx: Yeah, I have a new light setup and about 10 different backgrounds. I've been playing around trying to figure out which one is best. This last time I'd basecoated the base and it went from white to dark brown. This threw off the camera and the background I was using isn't working right now. I'll try out a few others tonight. Thanks for the input on this; I'm not sure I would have noticed otherwise. So at lunch today, I finished the belly, added some red glazes to the inside of the mouth, and painted the stalagmites. I just have a few touch-ups left. I'm trying to decide if I should do something else with the base, or leave it stark and barren. Any thoughts on basing? Part of me wants to leave it bare because this will be used for a sale picture and I don't want to missrepresent what comes with the mini (though that ship may have sailed since I put it on a CAV base). Jordan Peacock
Wow. I really love the texturing and highlights on those eyes. :D
SAbel
Andy this is outrageous work from start of sculpting to finish and final paint. Do you know if these will be ready for Gen-Con I would like to have at least one. Sean
Moderator TaleSpinner Posted July 23, 2012 Author Moderator Share Posted July 23, 2012 Andy this is outrageous work from start of sculpting to finish and final paint. Do you know if these will be ready for Gen-Con I would like to have at least one. Sean I wish I knew. Troll Forged is a one man show, and I know he's really backed up with new sculpts that need to be released now that his new plastic system is working. I don't know where this mini is in the que. Sorry I don't have a better answer. I'm learning fast as a sculptor that it often takes many months for sculpts to be released once I am done with them, no matter who is producing them. I suppose that is why most mini companies don't want sculptors to run WIPs; it gets everyone interested too early in the process. Take care, Andy
Moderator TaleSpinner Posted July 24, 2012 Author Moderator Share Posted July 24, 2012 Hour 18, Base Options, and Background Tests: I painted the base and did a few touch-ups. I still have a couple to go. Now I am stuck on the base. Part of me wants to leave it stark and barren (caves are pretty barren and this would best reflect how the mini comes) as follows: Dark Blue Background Another idea I have is to sculpt a dragon skull for the base (I put the Hydra head in as a place holder to get the idea; I'd actually sculpt a dragon skull though): Tan Background The next idea is to have an open treasure chest, with the idea that the beast caught some adventurers trying to steal its loot: Med Blue Background Finally, I thought of doing a shield and sword: Light Tan Background Please let me know which base concept you like best, or give me an alternate idea. I can sculpt nearly anything I need. Finally, let me know which background you like best (you can also pick the dark one I used in previous posts). Thanks for your help, Andy
Lastman
I agree with your gut and prefer the "stark and barren" base. There's a lot going on up top and more at the bottom would be a bit noisy -- and people who want it for dioramas will enjoy adding their own carnage to the base.
DixonGrfx
I am a fan of the stark base too. Not that adding to the base couldn't turn out great. For the background colors, I like the dark blue version best. The dark value really brings the model forward in the composition. I like the hue contrast of the Tan version too but the darker value seems to highlight the model better. For a really dramatic impact, you might try a dark value neutral brown color. That would bring forward the beast and de-emphasize the stalagmite. I would love to see the beast displayed in an environment of Hirst cavern mold pieces painted to match the base. That would be sweet. Then he would have the illusion of floating. :)
