gr8fulphish
I'm with Dixon and Lastman. I'd leave the base as is. If you must put something in, I'd suggest a simple Reaper skull (i.e. the ones that are in every bottle of paint). Something VERY simple. I've also been following since your initial post and must reiterate...FANTASTIC job! Start to finish. My skills are lacking in comparison to yours - and my mind is blown!
Baphomet69
I agree, the first picture rules. Empty base - though the single human skull sounds good too, it's small enough to not draw away from the figure. The dark blue background makes the base look great without taking attention away from the main focus.
SAbel
I would stay bare on the base; it is not a diorama piece so leave it as a miniature that you sculpted. I like the med. blue or lt. tan background for pictures they both bring out nice aspects of your sculpture. I agree that it has pushed frenzy up for the project but that is a good thing. I believe that WIPs are one way to make people keep coming back to find out if an item is released yet and to see what is coming next. You are a gifted artist I cannot wait to see more of your work. Shogan
Ill be out there on my own and say that I liked the treasure chest. I like the idea of the adventurers thinking they've hit the jackpot only to have THAT jump out and say boo. But the barren looks great as well. This entire piece is amazing. MamaGeek
I like the plain cave base, although the brown color probably could use some grating up. If you want to make the base fancier without adding too much to it, consider a puddle, maybe with a drip of drool from the monster's lip, and ripples in the water radiating out from the implied previous drip, though that might be hard to do with water effects. Another idea is some low-growing mushrooms.
MonkeySloth
Guess I'm in the minority as I like the one with the weapon and shield.
SAbel
MamaGeek has a great idea with the addition of drool and a puddle. I can just see it now the beast knows that its prey is coming and has started to salivate over its next meal. Just as the party enters the lair the GM produces from behind her screen this wonderful piece that will be the show case to the adventure.
Moderator TaleSpinner Posted July 30, 2012 Author Moderator Share Posted July 30, 2012 Thanks everyone. I decided against the drool, as the only opening into his body is through the tip of his lamprey like tongue and thus there would be no need for saliva in the rest of its mouth. I did some smoothing, added more highlights to the rock, varnished it, and add a gloss coat to the eyes and tongue tip. You can see the final here. Thanks for following along and for all the great advice. This mini has been a great ride from armature to the last touch of varnish.
