How do you manage your shelf of shame?

I'm curious, because I have most of my unpainted minis still in their packaging, in a clear box under my painting table, but I was contemplating getting every one washed, tidied up, and prepped for painting, *then* putting them on an actual shelf, so they're all there to see, and maybe inspire me. But then I'm worried about dust and the cats knocking them about and whatnot. Bleh. It's getting to become a *thing* because I'm up over 20 now, and running out of box space. To say nothing for when my Kickstarter stuff comes in...

What do you folks do? How do you store your unpainted minis?

 hmm 20 seems like a small number. I store mine in their orignal packaging, then those packages are in boxes, bags, on the shelf; whereever they fit. Having moved to a new house recently, and having a full on game room. I hope to get back to painting a displaying them on built in shelves I plan for the walls of the room.

20 probably is a small number, haha, but I've been pretty good about painting what I accumulate. I also have about 15 WIP that are out on my drawing table... But I sense that number growing, somewhere between now and March, and I'm curious about how you guys handle yours. You seem to store yours like I do.

I have a plastic Halloween skull, the kind the kids carry to collect their trick or treat candy in. It's overfull at the moment, with the excess unpainted spillover inhabiting a Reaper tote bag nearby.

I have an 8" x 16" shelf that has all my unpainted primed minis, and maybe 40 figures in a mob on my desk that have at least a little paint on them.

That's kinda what I was thinking. No problems with dust or cobwebs or anything? I suppose I could actually...like...dust things. I think it'll be a fun afternoon unwrapping and prepping all my poor lost souls. But then I get a wash of guilt, thinking like "I should really take care of all you guys on my desk first" I mean, I have two minis that I started painting in Feb 2011...for a game that buckled last summer, unfortunately, and they're both not even half done.

It CAN get that bad. I've never quite gotten THAT bad, but at one point, I probably had a hundred or so unpainted figures, metal and plastic, loads of unfinished little projects. I guess it depends on how compulsive you are.

(although even I draw the line at a whole Reaper totebag full of unpainted metal. That's just... wow.)

Yeah, it can get that bad. Reaper has put out over 3000 figures. Even in my best years, painting over 100 a year I can't keep up. And then there's the stuff I buy from other manufacturers.

Welcome to the addiction hobby!

As a 40k and fantasy player I have tended to collect bits and pieces of semi started armies and never gotten around to painting them all. I am going through a big clean out this weekend and hope to whittle down from the several thousand models sitting in storage boxes in my closet and get to a more reasonable number...

My Shelf of Shame is more of a Closet of Shame that I keep closed and try not to think about....ever.....

I don't think that 20 on the shelf and 15 in WIP status even qualifies as a shelf of shame. Just looking at my desk I can probably get to over 200 in some form of WIP status. There are boxes (note the plural) full of miniatures still in their blisters that at wild guess number in the hundreds. That does not include my historical stuff which I'm scared to even contemplate how many there are.
