"Warlord Rising" is a novel. It contains no rules, to my knowledge.

Warlord 2nd Edition contains all the rules you need to play, and all the original factions except Razig, which is online only.

Savage North ALSO contains all the rules you need to play, and all the NEW factions.

The rules are the same in both books. No override of anything except 1st edition, which is out of print anyway (although it has much awesome Talin art and beautiful color paintwork on the figures; I still recommend it 'cos it's gorgeous)

As to factions, I will make your life easy:

2E: Crusader Knights, Darkspawn, Dwarves, Elves, Mercenaries, Necropolis, Nefsokar, Overlords, Reptus, and Reven.

SN: Bloodstone Gnomes, Darkreach Elves, Icingstead Barbarians, Kargir Orcs, Koborlas, Kragmarr Dwarves, the Sisterhood of the Blade, and the Tembrethil Wood Elves.

Is this the information you were looking for?

Savage North does have the complete core rules. It also has a total of 8 factions, none of which appear in Warlord 2.0

Warlord 2.0 has the complete core rules + 10 factions which do not appear in Savage North.

Warlord Rising, to the best of my knowledge, is a novel.

You may wish to end up getting both Savage North and Warlord 2.0 at some point, depending on which factions you are interested in. There is also another faction of undead pirates that is only found online at Reaper's website.

One minor point - If a special ability was in the 2nd ed. book but isn't used by any factions in the Savage North book, it won't be listed in Savage North. On the same angle, Savage North introduced some new special abilities that aren't in the 2nd ed. book. Each book is completely playable for the army lists it contains, but it's just good to be aware about how the special abilities are done.

alright, well im ordering th books to read before i order any minis for them. ive been reading the fourms and looking at the army builder. what point size is a good minimum for starting and what are the tourneys usually played at? also is this a game that is played a lot at reapercon?

I would say 250-300 would be a good minimum starting point. Ideally you want each side to have at least two troops so you can see how the initiative system works. Tourneys are most often played at 1000 points. There is a tournament at ReaperCon (at least the last 3 years) that is played on Friday and Saturday, though players only play on one day (whichever day works best for their schedule).

The Warlord tournament has been a fixture at ReaperCon since 2006, though JB is correct that the last couple years, there has been the option to play either Friday or Saturday in an effort to accomodate more players with a limited number of tables.

I would also agree with his general assessment of starting size; anything over 250 points allows you to build at least one decent troop, and playing at 500 will often allow you to add a 2nd troop/solo to the mix to understand the initiative system better. 1000 points is the stand for tournaments (and also what many players play pick-up games at as well); even though the game scales pretty well both up and down from this point-value, it was designed with the 1000 point mark in mind.

Yes, Warlord Rising is a novel and not a rulebook. I wrote it, and I'm pretty sure I left out rules. The second book, Warlord Revenge, is done and awaiting finishing touches, silly things like cover and layout. It also has no rules in it. Read them anyway!

Glad to hear it's almost done. I was wondering when the next one would come out.

That freakin' ROCKS! I really enjoyed Warlord Rising (and would recommend it for anyone who is into the Warlord world setting, or just enjoys a good fantasy read) and cannot wait to see Warlord Revenge.

Thanks for the info!
