AubreyE
Hi Everyone, I have never purchased a mini before in my life, so I need a bit of help here. How necessary is the case, and at their comparative price points ($1.50 per paint color and $25 for a case holding 150 minis), which one is the better deal? I know the paint price is a good 70 to 80 cents cheaper per color than the lowest price I could find, but I haven't seen any cases like the one in the kickstarter. Also, how do you guys plan on transporting the bigger minis? Thanks for any help you guys can offer.
WhatAboutBob
I would probably go with the paints myself. Both are an excellent deal, however the paints will probably be a more welcome addition to your new collection. One of the greatest things about the Bones materials is how well paint sticks to them. If you wanted to, you could probably get away with just using a large dice bag to throw your miniatures in when you need to carry them about (not the best method - but they are very durable). If you plan on doing a lot of traveling with a lot of miniatures, the cases may well be a good option. Most people though will be moving fewer figures less often though (the case would be an excellent buy for wargamers or if you already had a large selection of metal or resin miniatures which are more easily damaged. Paints however can get very pricey, as you generally end up picking up a few every couple miniatures. Not because they run out - but because you are looking for a specific color. Having a selection of good paints to start with will help to offset that price.
Hellcow
Despite how beautiful that case looks ultimately I have decided against it. I would much rather get all 4 paint sets and have pretty much all the colours I will ever need. Likely a few of the colours I will need multiples of but I can worry about that later. The case, again while really nice, just isn't as useful - I would say especially in the OPs case as he has never painted before (and I assume has no paint!). From everything I have read the Bones are super durable and once clear coated (or better yet a method I read about where you use Minwax http://www.minwax.ca/ to both shade and seal your minis) they are very tough. This is one of things that really attracted me to the Bones line - excellent durability!
Inarah
Unless you have a burning need to carry around 150 minis -- like you plan on painting a Warlord army or two for the tournament at Reapercon, I would say get the paints. If you're just going to display the figures you won't need a case for them. If you're going to paint a few for use in games, there are small cheap options for protecting and transporting them. figure case price comparison: http://www.amazon.com/Games-Workshop-Figure-Storage-Carrying/dp/B000FCLTK8 A lot of gamers use these, the price is right and they are easy to find, but as you see there are no individual slots for figures. It is easy, however to cut the foam to hold your large size figs. http://www.amazon.com/Plano-Protector-Four-Pistol-Case/dp/B000P3WPKK
Frankthedm
And it is easier to make your own case than brew your own paints.
Doug Sundseth
FWIW, if you want an inexpensive miniatures case, Plano makes a very inexpensive pistol case that works well. (I also use that case for speedlights for photography.)
Qwyksilver
If you need a small inexpensive case. Buy one of reapers boxed sets with the lunchbox case. They come with egg crate foam and you can always order the figure inserts. Get a case and minis...
Vyr
I put my miniatures in either cases or tackle boxes (which are awesomely cheap), mostly to stop them from getting dusty until I can get a glass cabinet. I would probably recommend at least a tackle box to keep things organised and dust free. :)
thatguywiththeface
you only need a carrying case if you plan on lugging them around or don't have a display case to keep them dust-free. (edit: if you're looking for a cheap, solid alternative, tackleboxes seem to be the way to go, according to everyone else) paints are more important by far, I would say, but then you as an individual might not want to paint them. (edit: but then again, you're asking about paints, so you probably DO want to paint them. So, buying a few would be a good choice. You can always add to your collection later, so try not to splurge on a huge paint set. 10 colors is enough to start, I would imagine) Edited August 28, 2012 by thatguywiththeface
Foxfire
Get both if you aren't sure ;p If you need the paints you are better off going with them as you'll get more use out of it. But both options are a steal at the price being offered so if you can afford just that little bit more, it's money well spent at this point. webznz
Paints, then Just before your minis come order one of these or another of the smaller more affordable versions.. this is what I will be doing.
buglips*the*goblin
Given a choice between Paint and "x" the answer is always paint. Always. That's why I have two full sets of Pro Paint, a full set of Coat D'Arms, and I'm working on a set of old Partha Paint. Doesn't explain why I only have 10% of my miniatures painted, though. Stay in school, kids. Stay in school.

Who sells Partha Paint please? Those are my favorite but I only have a few. They have lasted for decades without drying out.

Samurai007
I'd say get more minis... I use ziplock bags for my "carrying case" for plastic minis, they don't need a hard case and foam padding. And I use craft-store paint which is not as good of course, but can be found for well under a dollar a bottle at Michaels, for instance (in fact, their paint is 40% off until Sept 1: http://weeklyad.michaels.com/). So I'd say just add on more minis! But if you have to choose between the 2, I'd say the paints. It'll be very useful painting all those minis, while you'll only use the case for taking a large number of them somewhere else.
