vutpakdi
Depends... What works for you will depend on your own circumstances, and everyone will be answering from their own preferences. Are you getting any other paints? If not, then I would highly reccomend getting the first set of paints. Yes, you can use craft paints, but using paints designed for minis will give you better results due to the smaller pigment grain size and higher pigment density. If you want to use craft paints, at least use Delta Ceramcoat. If you already have some of the other paints in your order (sets 1 and 3) and will be taking painted minis to games, go for the case. Larger minis can go in boxes with foam surrounding them. Ron
smokingwreckage
For my money, it's easier to home-bake a case out of boxes and foam than to home-bake paints. I have a lot of paints so I was gonna get the cases. But then I saw FrankThe DM's post on making a minis case and I decided the money would go on MORE MONSTERS!
Qwyksilver
Given a choice between Paint and "x" the answer is always paint. Always. Always? Which would you want to drink? Paint? or X? Where X = Urine...True Water...False Imperial Russian Stout...False Milk...False Liquid Pewter...True
buglips*the*goblin
Label says non toxic. I stand by my words. **** This may be exacerbated by my tendency to refer to colors as "flavours". **** Still probably won't make Imperial Purple taste like Grape **** Awfully tempted to try, though. Awfully tempted.
Qwyksilver
When the MSP came out we desperately tried to encourage Anne to add mint or vanilla extract.
Arachne
I would always go with paint. Paint paint paint. You can fashion a case out of just about anything. Unless Russian Imperial Stout is on the table...then all bets are off. RIS > everything on this whole planet. Or, if it's not better, it at least makes everything better. Moderator Froggy the Great Posted August 28, 2012 Moderator Share Posted August 28, 2012 I can tell the difference between the various batches of MSP by the taste. Yeah. I use the Reaper Lunchbox cases one per army, because it's more convenient that way. That said, I am far too much like a hermit crab when it comes to storage solutions.

AubreyE
Thanks for all the insight guys, it's greatly appreciated! At present I plan on getting every mini I want (vampire, Orcpocalypse, Undead Horde, Swamp Things, Fire & Ice Giant King/Queen, There be Dragons, Forces of Nature, Undead Giant, Nethyrmaul, Clockwork Dragon, Frost Wyrm, Pathfinder Dragon, Hydra, Kaladrax & C'thulhu) so the paints and or cases are the icing on the cake. Sounds like paints aren't an option and the case while a great deal isn't as absolutely necessary. In my particular situation I play more at game shops and other people's houses than my own, so some sort of carrying arrangement needs to be made, but I won't need to be taking every single mini I own to every game. Perhaps I'll stretch and get one case and 3 paints (not sure if any of the fantasy figures need the IMEF colors) but keep them all in a tackle box for storage at my house. Also I really like the four pistol holder that was recommended, that will be great for the bigger ones. Thanks guys!
Xerobull
FWIW, if you want an inexpensive miniatures case, Plano makes a very inexpensive pistol case that works well. (I also use that case for speedlights for photography.) Just picked up five of these at walmart for $11.97 each. Bonus: you know you live in a redneck town when the cashier doesn't blink at five gun cases being purchased at once.

VileKnight
Personally I say go for the case. $25 and you have storage for 150 mini's. You just can't find anything (thats not a DIY job) better. The paints are a good deal, but I personally rather choose my own colors to purchase instead of just getting bundles that have been set for me. I know Michaels has plastic storage organizer *systems* so one thought is to think about how you're going to organize your mini's, then buy a system that allows you to easily tote whatever miniatures you need for a game. You can get some foam sheets and make your own foam padding, but a plastic mini in an organizer would be pretty hard to damage without foam.
