I'm disappointed in this miniature. It's such a great sculpt, and I can't think of any board game (that I have) to use it with.

Gonna have to come up with something for Descent.

So you are not disappointed with the way it came out, just that its not usable with the games you have right?

Fair enough. I'm disappointed in my kids for much the same reason - They turned out ok but they suck at Descent...

I love the sculpt! This is one of the ones that my girlfriend kept threatening to steal from me before I ordered a set for her, and that was based on the concept art alone. I can think of a dozen different uses for her, including a few dioramas. I may have to get an extra copy and see if I can somehow repose her into a standing position... The hardest part would be the hair, and I would be somewhat loath to ruin the figure, though, so I'm a bit unsure if it would be worth it.

Sigh...

Overall, I really like the way the sculpt turned out. My only reservation is the decorative pieces on the sides of her head. Not that they are badly done, but they are nearly as large as her face and seem to draw attention from the rest of the figure. My wife's first reaction, was "I like it but what are those big things on her head". Not a big problem since I can trim them or remove them so they aren't quite so overwhelming before painting the figure. .

I think she looks great and can't wait to paint her! She is going on the shelf, no grubby beer gamer hands going on her...

My buddies will prolly pet her paint off assuming I can find the time to paint all the stuff we're getting. I do have a plan of attack ... giants first, then dragons, then ... dwarves. Yeah.

Rig the pledge manager so you can trade the kids in for some Bones.

Yes, Hill Giant Women would be cool, make them bat crap crazy zerkers! Boobies and butts flying everywhere! Make the dudes bat crap crazy too! Butts and balls everywhere, big rocks and giant rocks!

Is it me or has this all of sudden become a big issue? Every board is now debating this on its front page (not an exaggeration). Is this some sort of organized suppress the fun campaign? After 40 years, why is it coming up now? WTF.

This hasn't suddenly become an issue. This has been an "issue" for as long as I can remember, and I've been involved in gaming for about 25 years - and I know this nonsense predates me. And yes, it is a semi-organized suppress the fun campaign.

Basically there is a cadre of women, along with some men who insist on white knighting for them, who are dedicated to expunging any thing that might slightly resemble cheesecake from the gaming hobby. At one point in my life I thought these people were making a valid complaint, but over the years I've learned to just tune them out and ignore them. The fact if the matter is that these people are like religious fundamentalists - you're never going to appease or satisfy them unless you cave in completely and let them tell you what to think -- or, if you're a company like Reaper, what to publish/produce.

There is no point in even acknowledging these people's complaints, it just encourages them to complain more. If you go over to WOTC's forums you'll find a sub-forum called "Astrid's Parlor." It was created to give these people a place to air their grievances about gender issues in gaming. In that forum you'll find multiple threads in which boring neurotics dedicate their free time to counting the number of bare midriffs and exposed shoulders in gaming related art, and complaining bitterly about how women are portrayed. Last time I checked the threads had been running for more than five years, and were full of "dedicated gamers" who can't (or simply won't) distinguish between art from WOTC-published books, art from TSR-published books, and art from Heavy Metal magazine. And the really sad thing is you can go back to the Forum in Dragon Magazine -- from back when forums were in magazines and there was no such thing as the world wide web! (dear god, I'm old) -- making pretty much the same complaints.

I mean seriously, these are the same kinds of complaints that helped bring Julie Guthrie and Sandra Garrity to prominence, as they were amongst the earliest sculptors to do non-cheesecake miniature women. And I'm not calling JG and SG old or anything, but they were already huge names in miniatures when I was a wee tyke. But the people who make these kinds of complaints don't know that, don't care about that, and won't acknowledge that. Because to these people, the point isn't to address a problem or create meaningful change, its to whine and complain and feel victimized so that they can blow smoke up their own rear-ends about how morally superior they are to everyone else.

The reality is that plenty of women love cheesecake -- I was introduced to Bettie Page by female friends who idolize her -- and cheesecake sells. To both male and female model painters. Meanwhile, the nattering nabobs of negativity who insist on endlessly filing grievance against the very possibility that somewhere, anywhere there might be a man (and they'll never acknowledge that women do it to) admiring a woman for something other than her commitment to feminist ideology (whatever that means these days) will continue to produce a volume of complaints that far, far outweighs the volume of sales they are responsible for. And no one in the history of the gaming industry (which, it should be pointed out, has a long history of bending over backwards to try to appease this crowd) has ever made money trying to appeal to them (see the publishing history of the Blue Rose RPG for the sales disaster that resulted from trying to make a game that appeals to these folks).

At the end of the day, the reality is that starting a miniatures line is one of the cheapest businesses to get into. You can go into business for $15k, less if you outsource the casting. If these people honestly cared about the industry's supposed failure to serve them, they could go start their own line of female friendly models. And then they could watch their investment shrivel up and die because there is no market there.

But they won't do that, because the only point of these people's lives is to whine and complain and make it someone else's duty to address their pet peeves.

Dude, I think you're overreacting as much as the wild feminists you target. I find that most people can be pleased simply by giving females similar positions of power and semi-reasonable armor. Klocke usually succseeds at this, which is why I love his minis. In the case of the Cloud Giant, I'm mostly disappointed that it isn't standing upright. The armor is reasonable for the fluff. The pose isn't sexist in the least, just a bit annoying to people like me who would rather have someone in a more generic pose. It happens to be easier to sell and attractive model that isn't in a suggestive pose or the like. Better to have no complainers then 50.

Basicly, what I'm geting at is that females can be attractive AND combatant, competent, and realistic (as in no implants, not that some things can't be fantastical) . Seriously, it's worth it.
