Last Knight
Not to stir the pot, but I've noticed that on these forums there is a tendency to see anyone who is hating on anything as a troll. These boards seem to operate heavily on the "If you can't say something nice, say nothing at all" rule, and if you say something not nice it will tend to provoke a negative reaction. So, in a sense, expressing a negative opinion on these boards is akin to trolling. Not an inaccurate statement, but I have to say I like the atmosphere here better than on other boards I lurk; one, in particular, has a "no direct attacks" rule that leads to all sorts of passive-aggressive snarkiness that makes the whole place toxic after a while. Unless you're trashing GW. That appears to be okay with everyone. To be fair, they are the Wal*Mart of hobbies, without even the benefit of the Wal*Mart low prices.

Unless you're trashing GW. That appears to be okay with everyone. I think that the sudden influx of new members has caused some sensitivity on the parts of regulars (including myself), who are now seeing a slightly more assertive poster, and perceiving that through the filter of years of community, and seeing "trolls" where none exist. We're not trying to be a "if you can't say something nice, go elsewhere" community, but we do want to create a friendly, welcoming entry point for hobbyists and gamers. regarding GW in particular, I have a lot of respect for their world and IP, and collect a great many of their models, because as a hobbyist, I recognize fun sculpts and kits. There is a tendency to be negative towards them on these forums, and as long as that does not become abusive, we permit it. At the same time you will note that we receive comments and criticisms regularly (see: C'thulhu, clockwork dragon, Storm Giantess, etc.) but do not censor them until they become abusive. I welcome even negative comments about our product and our business, as long as it can be used to help us serve the community of gamers better (of which I am one!). When moderation actions are taken, I usually take a lot of heat in Private Messages, as well, and have been called a plethora of horrible things for enforcing the rules. I am alternately a Fascist, a Nazi, a Mindless Corporate Zombie, a jerk-off, an butt (in it's many permutations, including hole, wipe, and head), and just a dick. I will point out that if you call me one of these things, even via PM, I consider that abusive, and will lock your account. For the record: I do not think we've had a genuine troll on these forums in a long time, and certainly none of our active users are trolls. Some of them are slightly more acerbic than we have become used to, but diversity is the spice of life. Or is that paprika?

hairrorist
Good stuff Bryan. While we've got you here, can you give us another shot from a different angle? :P Also--can anyone identify the make or model of those Cthulhus? I really like the bottom left one. The wings and the body are really nice on it. Reaper's has a better head. I'm curious--why does everyone seem to think that 'rudimentary' means small? They absolutely are not synonyms, or even related in meaning.

Last Knight
I think we should ask Kit to input some code so that, whenever somebody PMs Bryan, they receive an image macro of Wil Wheaton saying "Don't Be A Dick. Have you reviewed your message to Bryan? Are you being a dick? Are you sure you want to submit this?" and then a confirmation button. Actually, this might be a good idea for all PMs...

Girot
In the spirit of cooperation, and OCD, I wish to clarify something I said earlier: If memory serves: a traditional 'troll' is a person who gets on a forum (or chat room back in the day) and intentionally creates conflict through whatever means are effective. Those who have provided constructive feedback, positive or negative, are not trolls. In regards to moderation action that must take place from time to time... deal with it. This is a public forum, yes, but one hosted by a business. I am not even going to attempt to get into the nuances of the business thing but trust me there are very good reasons for the rules we are (very politely) asked to abide by. Lastly: name calling, on it's own, does not make you a troll but is completely unnecessary. please try not to be a douchnozzle. (technically not name calling since you'd have to DO some name calling for this to apply making the name-caller responsible for their douchenozzle status)

We're not trying to be a "if you can't say something nice, go elsewhere" community, but we do want to create a friendly, welcoming entry point for hobbyists and gamers. I didn't mean to imply that. More that this community just isn't used to people saying mean things, and that leads to a perception that someone saying mean things must be doing it to intentionally get a rise out of people. For the record: I do not think we've had a genuine troll on these forums in a long time, and certainly none of our active users are trolls.
