KS new sculpts

The wing bone is looking bulky due to the camera perspective. Wide angle closeups lead to all sorts of weird distortion.

I don't think it looks like there any distortions in that photo beyond forced perspective issues.

Also the tail bones are just thicker, rather than distorted, because the Spinous Process is pretty much in line with it's size in the concept art. I don't mind the thicker tail, the concept art had it a tad too thin.

You traced the tail wrong in the concept art. You seem to be confusing the tip of the woman's staff for the tip of the dragon's tail.
Right you are about her staff. Hard to make out that she even has a staff without zooming in.

Still to me the tail concept looks more like two disconnected pieces rather than connected in one piece circling around.

(Can't add it to my order right now, sadly.)

I gotta say, Kaladrax is all sorts of sexy.

For an undead dragon, of course.

*blushes*

go on! you know you want a piece!

*Looks at obvious Bones pun. Leaves it on the table.*

The Auld Grump

Not only a Bones pun but also a reference to Idle Hands! Can anybody name the scene?

I like the overall look. I'd like to know how people plan to paint the filled in area between the ribs and other areas the are clear in the concept art?

I would probably try a darker bone colour so hopefully perspective would look more like you are seeing the inside of Kaladrax than a flat wall as such. I won't be sure how that'll work out until I'e got him in hand.

Another thought is to 'flesh' him out a little into more of a zombie dragon using something like the microwaved PVA idea in the special effects thread and then painting the filled in areas a purplish red to look like remaining internal organs and bits.

While it diverged from the concept art, I expected and hoped for some thickening of the fig to counteract the flexibility of bones plastic.

The flexibility shouldn't be an issue, given the negligable weight of the components where the thickening is most noticable, like the wing bones. My suspicion would be that this is a case of playing it safe in the face of potential moulding issues.

One thing that is puzzling is the vertical compression of the rib cage compared to the concept.

The vertebrata and tail look like real bones, quite similar to some small animal bones I got from the Czimers's brick and mortar store. Similar enough that I am wondering if the sculptor took some shortcuts by using all natural materials. Will greenstuff adhere to animal bone?

As long as it's been properly degreased, yes. And so will milliput.

Shame the inner torso and neck are so filled in between the ribs.

(sigh) What could have been . . . .

Kaladrax, meet scalpel. Scalpel, meet Kaladrax.

Sorry. But the rest of the sculpt is too awesome not to carve out the block-off, and bring it closer to concept. If necessary, the ribs will be moulded, copies produced and their inner surfaces profiled, the entire area carved away, and the new ribs fitted, after any neccesary re-sculpting of the vertebrae's ventral surfaces.

Love the Kaladrax sculpt. Love love love.

It does look like the tail curls too close under the head to put Hyrekia (or whomever) inside the curve, as in the concept, but I think the tail would've had to be a good 4 inches longer to make that work. Assuming I know the scale from that photo. But I'm good with putting her outside the curve, too.

Gosh, that's a pretty pile of animate bones.

I expect, given the bones material, that it'll be pretty simple to get inside the ribcage if you really need to.

Ironically I feel the sculpt came out near perfectly. The 'filled in' look where his insides are obviously still insides look quite like the concept sketch. While a hollow ribcage would have looked insanely cool I don't think that was ever the idea. I fully intend to take this and run with it.

For example: why not freehand the look of rotten internal organs? Or use something that could be applied to that whole region to create a layer of skin ontop of the ribs and guts...?

I was considering something that I did back in school for a drama project - brown crackle paint over cellophane to simulate peeling skin. (The class was on special effects - we also did a melting face effect both in makeup and for a final effect using colored wax and a plaster skull - the seventies were an interesting time.)

*EDIT* For carving out the in between spaces - a a dental burr and a Dremel tool or the like would work well, I think. Use Low speed so that friction does not melt the PVC.
