Browns and Colour Theory

Recommended Posts

Largely true.

But brown is a tertiary color that can be mixed a variety of ways. Olive drab is a green brown and should be treated as such on a color wheel. And you can get yellow, red, or purple browns as well (we mostly call blue-brown "gray"). If PAE were around, I'm sure he'd be happy to expound at length on browns — leather brown, earth brown, mahogany brown, grass brown, sky brown, snow brown ....

OD is clearly not yellow.

OD is very clearly yellow. There are other "military greens" that are bluer, but OD is not green.

Of course this argument would need to establish what exactly we are calling OD. And what we mean by yellow and green. It will turn philosophical.

OLIVE DRAB, right??

Thats RGB #666600 What is RGB #FFFF00 Why its pure bright Yellow!

Do not disrespect my color authority. I've got mutant eyes that pick up two different color palletes.

mmm every color I have that claims to be olive drab is definitely a green, sounds like a philosophical discussion that could spill forth into beekeepers.

Olive Drab is defined by the Federal Standard 595 paint spec as FS14087 which is indeed green as indicated by the second number in the code which is a 4 which is green. Now truly the debate becomes what color is olive drab?

If we're going to play that game, my last color acuity test was about three months ago. Per that test, my color acuity is "superior", a result of my not making any mistakes in any of the four sets of color chips. When was your last test?

That said, "olive drab" (like "khaki") is a tertiary color (which is to say, mixed from all three primary colors) and the name describes a variety of colors, sometimes more yellow and sometimes more blue, but nearly everyone would describe the middle of that range as some variant of green. Anyone who doubts this can try a Google image search on "olive drab" and decide for himself.

But hey, call it "red" if it pleases you.

Primary colors don't exist anyway, everyone in this argument (Including me) is basically wrestling on a house of cards. I do get that people perceive it as "green" but there are lots of reasons why.

I know if I want OD, I take yellow and add black.

Does anyone know what the closest match to dirty grey is out of the currently available paints? I'm kind of on my last little bit of it, and I used it on a bunch of stuff that I'll likely need to get close to matching in the future.

So my niece is turning 13 next month. She already has a huge interest in minis and loves to paint with me. I'm trying to build her a kit or care package for her birthday so we can video chat and paint together. I'm at a loss as to what to put in it though. She has a ton of minis I gave her and a few brushes but I want to get her like a full starters kit of sorts (paint, better brushes, brush soap, etc.). I'm already considering the first LTPK. What would you put in it for someone just starting out?

Some of these came back as other numbers, but but the rest won't be brought back by Reaper and some might be present in other paint lines.

Hi!! my name is Katerina and I'm new to painting miniatures, I begun
with a miniature from NonSenseminiatures, the Barbarian, I buyed the
54mm because it's bigger and maybe easier to paint.
I asked some help to NonSense and he already made a base coat for me, I
would like to get some help for painting because I see too much
information and don't know were begin.
I already make painting but totally different
Also he gave for me a discount code Katerina10%, because he will sell my
      paints also!!!

Hi all, quick question what are some paints you would like to see from reaper?

I would like to see a line of effect paints, such as a few different rust effects, something for a running oil or grease, and a very flat black for soot build up.
