Kylons99 see how you have that fairly subtle highlight now on the hair? If you mix a lighter shade again and apply it over 2/3 of the current highlight and then another brighter highlight over half of the prior one, and finally with pure white paint little thin lines over half of the last one.

This will make the illusion of shiney (ie clean & healthy) hair. It's also a great way to manage black hair.

I was wondering if I should take the highlights up a notch. Sounds like it's worth it, I'll take your advice.

As said, L2PK2 "wastes" paint and water. I had enough in each coat to paint ten miniatures! ...

Welcome aboard, and nice progress on the monk!

I hear ya on the colour choice issue. If you check out http://www.reapermini.com/forum/index.php?/topic/45937-lanura-windsong-wip/ , there's some interesting info on choosing colours, with a link to a nice online tool that could be helpful. A lot of folks also recommend using a colour wheel. Personally, as I'm still a novice, I'm using the "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" method, and trying to recreate things from either concept art or pics I've found on the web.

One thing that has been handy for me so far is uploading images of mini's I like to the Power Palette tool on the main Reaper website here, then using that to put names to the various colours that people are using on their minis. It's given me a lot of ideas so far, though I haven't had much in the way of time to put things together yet. I figure I'll get that when those 200+ minis come rolling in this March

Be aware that while the Power Palette is fun, it really isn't that useful for getting colour matches. I rarely use more than 4 actual colours to create a colour, often just 3. Yet when I run my minis through the power palette I'm flat out getting even 1 of the colours I used!

So yes it can help, but truth is if you see a mini you like posted here ask about the colours that will get you much more accurate information on what a mini was painted with than the power palette.

In other news, more work done on Laurana last night, after we finished up our weekly Pathfinder game.

Since we've hit the hair (we'll be touching this up thanks to some well appreciated advice!), the kit says it's time to move on to the cloth.

Basecoat on the cloth is pretty simple, just a 1:1 paint/water mix of Sapphire Blue for the skirt, and 1:1 paint/water mix of Leaf Green for the shirt. Note that the kit calls for "Breionne Blue" or something like that, but it wasn't included in the kit itself. It wasn't problematic to figure out what to use, mind you.

Tough part of this for me was not getting paint on the skin I'd already worked on. Made me really think about slowing down and taking my time, as well as making it pretty obvious I need to work on my brush control a lot.

Also, I seem to have a recurring problem with paint flaking off of high edges, as you can see on the very tips of the ridges on the bottom of the skirt. Always seems to happen in places like that or on the tips of boots. Need to look into why that's happening, since when I'm painting the mini, I have it stuck on an old pill bottle with poster tack. Might be accidentally bumping things, or positioning them so I'm accidentally touching some paint before it fully dries.

After getting the basecoat done, we move on to shadows on the shirt, which are done with a wash of Sapphire Blue and Jade Green mixed 1:1. No specific water ratio is given, but I ended up using about 1:10 paint mixture to water, maybe a little more. Stills seems like it was too think, but it did really make the recesses around her stomach stand out.

And the final step for last night was highlights on the shirt and skirt. Shirt was done in a 1:1 mix of Sun Yellow and Jade Green, watered down about 1:10 with water. This mix seemed to work ok, though I ended up doing a fair amount of back and forth work with the shadow and highlight. Made me very thankful for my homemade wet palette!

Skirt was done with a mix of 1:2 Linen White and Sapphire Blue, as the directions called for. Here I added a step of washing in shadows with a Ultramarine Shadow (came with L2PK3 I believe...) mixed 1:10 paint to water, as the highlights kept getting away from me. Looking at it closer up with the camera, looks like I ended up washing out a lot of my highlight, so I'll have to go back and touch that up at some point.

Hopefully I'll get to the fiddly bits tonight!

I made a semi-wash out of Grass Green and a smidge of flow improver, the instructions would have me do a Walnut Brown wash and then dry brush the green again. I should probably do that at some point.. maybe when I do Laurana, because to be honest, I'm a bit burned out with Tsuko here.

So, now we're getting into familiar territory, hey? One primed Laurana, using our handily provided Reaper Brush-On Primer...

And then we brush on the "shadow" skin, using 4 drops of Rosy Flesh and 1 drop of Ruddy Leather to darken it. I did not use one drop of water to thin it, despite the instructions. I'm a rebel. :blues:

Pay no attention to her nice green base just yet, I had some left over when I did Tsuko's, so I went ahead and got that part out of the way. If I'm lucky, I can Walnut wash them both at the same time... otherwise, I might have to brush over spilled paint bits when the time comes, depending on how much my hands are shaking.

And what is up with that, anyway? I usually shake a bit, but it seems to be getting worse... I haven't even had any caffeine today. Maybe that's the problem...

Looks like you skipped the blacklining / brownlining part? I haven't started that yet, but it looks like a pretty darn good way to separate / cover up where the skin paint meets another color. I suspect that shading and highlights can also help to separate non-skin color from non-skin color (eg. Tsuko's white-grey sash and leggings from his red pants).

Thanks for the link. Kuler.adobe.com is NICE. Narrowing my color choices to a handful helps a lot!

How about shadowing the folds of her skirt with wash, then highlighting the rest of it? You'd highlight with thin layers, so wouldn't need a wash?

Hair time! Also the eyes, which I very much did not enjoy doing. The right one came out okay, but the left...

We start with 4 drops Sun Yellow: 1 drop Oiled Leather...

post-8164-0-17010600-1350698157_thumb.jpgpost-8164-0-01506700-1350698162_thumb.jpg

..then we paint washed-down Oiled Leather into the recesses...

post-8164-0-14978400-1350698167_thumb.jpg

Then highlight by dry brushing 2 Sun Yellow: 2 Linen White over the top.

Time for clothing! We start with the shirt, Leaf Green...

post-8164-0-30507600-1350698182_thumb.jpg

...and then move on to the skirts, Breonne Blue.

And I do believe my Reaper Pro Paint 10/0 has just about given up its ghost...

Looks like you got yourself an old-fashioned hooker!

I'm planning on following the instructions pretty closely, but I'm not sold on leaving my W&N #2 sitting in the rack for the project :)

That's the next thing on my expense list, I think, is getting some W&N brushes, which is annoying because I just bought some Army Painter sets... but, while I like the sizes and the triangular handles, I'm not really sold on the brush quality.

So I noticed both of you used Rose Skin - did that come in the kit?

Mine, which is the very old one, uses the same colors for both Tsuko and Laurana's skin - hers is just a less strong mix. I didn't really go for the yellow look on her, so I switched mine out for fair skin.

Da, tovarisch.

Tsuko gets "3 drops of Oiled Leather to 3 drops of Rosy Skin" for a "golden tone." Laurana starts with "one drop of Ruddy Leather to four drops of Rosy Skin" for her shadow, followed by straight Rosy Skin (appropriately thinned) for her midtone. Thus, she's less yellowy, even though they're both using Rosy Skin.

Yes, Rosy Skin comes with the kit now. I'm working on priming and basing mine. I've got 2 each of Tsuko and Laurana, so I've experimented a bit with the basing. Sooner or later I'll get around to actually, you know, painting them.

...did you buy two Kit 2s, or did you get another Tsuko/Laurana? And, whichever way... why?

I had a defective kit. Reaper corrected the issue, but in the process I ended up with Two of Tsuko and Laurana. So one of the Laurana's is becoming a Necromancer.

Hey, shiny! Laurana and Evil Laurana... you should give her a goatee.
