Maglok
Here is my tabletop painted 03407: Hellborn Troll I stuck with the blue painting scheme, because I needed the model to be done as soon as possible. The metal could use improving, but it is good enough for tabletop. Also a test for my lightbox. Still trying to get the hang of it, at the moment it makes very clear pictures, but slightly dull.
Thrym
I have this one and went with a classic green skin but the extra dermal natural armor is red. The best part of the figure I've got in progress has a large chunk of crystal in his hand and showing through the base.
Adrift
Maglok, all around great job! I'd only like to see one change made in the form of the color of the base. The heavy grey base in concert with the grey armor shades in the mid-section and the leg really pull my gaze away from the top of the mini. Change it to a dark brown with some faint brown highlights or something simple like that; maybe 5 minutes. It'll also bolster your metal. Sanael
Good-looking troll! There are aquatic and ice trolls that blue works really nicely for, so I think green is unnecessary. I'll echo Adrift on the color of the base; a dark brown wash would do wonders. If you wanted to spend more time on it, that base looks organic enough you could use a very dark green to re-color the entire thing, then a wash of brown to create a mat of decaying leaf litter or moss. I'm a big fan of the work you did in making his palm a different color than his more exposed skin. Nicely done!
CashWiley
You can play around with the image in post, like GIMP. Punch up the contrast and balance the brightness, not perfect but you get the idea.
Feanor
I dig it.
Maglok
Ok thanks guys! I am gonna have to change the base of this one now. Now it bothers me as well. :P @CashWiley: Well that is true, but you are also changing it from how it really looks though right?
Qwyksilver
Changing color brightness and contrast doesn't make it look different. It makes it look more like it actually does and removes some of the camera's bias.
Maglok
I am not much of a photographer. :) Thanks for the tip, I will try that next time.
CashWiley
Only enough to make it look closer to reality or even bring out the details of the paint job a bit more. Never to hide or change it. I never tweak color levels or sharpness or anything. Really, getting to know your camera (and mine's old and fairly limited) is a good thing. I'm still kind of dopey about it, but I learned how to fiddle with macro mode enough to get something decent enough that I don't have to mess in post. Mostly maxing out the f-stop (mine is f8 max, I've read f11 is minimum for this style of photography...) and then tweaking the exposure until it looks good. I'm around 1/10-1/15 on exposure with my homemade light box. I shoot from about 20-24" away with around 2.5x optical zoom.
Maglok
What is a f-stop then? I have a 800ms shuttertime at the moment I think and I do use a custom white balance based on the surroundings at time of shooting.
CashWiley
Like I said, I'm not really all that knowledgable. I just read a thing that said you should set your f-stop high, like f11 or maybe f22 or something. Since mine went to 8, that's where I put it. I don't know what it means, though :) The other setting in my camera's macro mode is the shutter speed, so after I maxed out the f-stop number, I just played with the exposure time until it looked decent. And then the distance from camera to subject until it wasn't blurry.
Caffiene
f-stop is also known as aperture. Its a measure of how wide open you have the camera set and therefore how much light gets in at one time. Smaller f numbers mean a wider aperture and more light is let in. Larger numbers (less light) give you a larger depth of field, but you have to compensate by having a slower shutter speed to let enough light in (which in turn means having to hold the camera more steady). So setting the f-stop high means a shot that is hard to hold steady but easier to get everything in focus at once. Setting the f-stop low means a shot that is harder to get everything in focus at once, but you can lower the shutter speed and dont need as steady hands. Pick whether you want to worry about the f-stop, shutter speed or both based on whether you are having problems with depth of field, steadiness, or light.
CashWiley
Yeah, forgot to add I use a tripod and the timer setting on the camera. Thanks for the good explanation of the relationship of all the camera stuff!
zoroaster100
Looks awesome. The only suggestion I would have is to paint the nipples a slightly darker shade of blue so they are visible (I think I see nipples on his chest - trolls have nipples right?)
