Not quite, seeing the values range from 1 to 13 and as I understand it there is only a 1 in 54 chance of a crit or a fumble. Possibly with suit based conditions as well. But yes its hardly original as a mechanical concept.

Still I've backed and I'll "wait and see" there are 42 days to go and I can see what the stretch goals unlock for me in that time. If I think I'm getting good value in 30ish days time I'll keep my pledge, it will also depend what happens with the Midgard Minis KS due to start soon.

My brother has a home brew RPG that uses playing cards and it's crazy fun because you level up by changing the suite or number of the card. With his game you start with about 3 1/2 total playing card decks (4 of each number of each suite up to 6 then it starter tapering off till you only get 1 of each face card) so playing cards can be really fun die replacement.

Back on topic. They've doubled their goal and so I hope they change their mind of not releasing what stretch goals are for another day and a half.

I think the idea is to only release the stretch goals once the free mini offer is over

possibly because they will be another draw to replace the mini,

possibly because they can 'start' the stretches at the level reached by Friday eg 80K + 25K stretch is better for them than 60K + 25K stretch

possibly because if they get too many backers early they might have to do another production run of the mini (they may have committed to this already, or could have a big stock left after it was a gencon freebie)

So, they've made a post in the comment section about additional pledge levels, etc.

We picked our pledge levels very carefully and put a lot of thought into them. We absolutely do not want to run this kickstarter like a store, with a dozen options to purchase and add ons for increased pledges. In fact if you are looking for a store we STRONGLY urge you to support your local gaming store when the game is available.

Our pledge levels are designed to give a few options for people who want to pledge and support the creation of a project that we're extremely excited about and want to create at an extremely high level. In return we've created what we think will be some special thank-you items in return. Along those lines, we particularly are not interested in creating a store for special edition items where they are treated like merchandise to be bought (and potentially in turn sold) due to this campaign.

If you do not want to back this project, or believe in what we are trying to create, we urge you to wait (and hopefully support your local store when they carry it). We absolutely hope you would not back this project simply for the merchandise you receive in return and see this as some sort of discount store competing with your local gaming store. That is not what we're here for, and we hope it's not what you're here for.

That said, with the vast outpouring of support and EXTREMELY positive feedback we're receiving due to this campaign, we are so happy to see that most of you do seem to understand what we are doing here on Kickstarter, and we have every intention to continue to thank all of you in return as your support grows.

Emphasis mine, since that line seems to have spawned some controversy in the comments section and on dakka. Definitely some interesting decisions being made.

Enough Malifaux fans will back it that it will succeed no matter what, but I'm less than impressed with the attitude that post represents. Its not enough to cancel my pledge outright but it sounds like a company that out of one side of its mouth is saying "we want your input" and out the other is saying "we don't care what you want".

I noticed early on when someone asked in the comments if fate decks and minis would be available as add ons there was a "pledge levels are set, support your local gaming store" reply which assumes your local gaming store stocks anything from Wyrd Miniatures, I've got several local stores and none of them do, they don't seemt o have much presence in the UK, the figures I've got I had to order from the US through eBay. I'd have liked the Miss Terious figure and would have rather bought her from the company than a potential scalper but I've just got no use for the game itself.

" We absolutely hope you would not back this project simply for the merchandise you receive in return "

woow

Technically I suppose you should be backing a Kickstarter because you believe in the product and want to see it released, the rewards are just incentives to pledge more rather than a purchased product, but the number of people that would support a kickstarter purely on that basis is probably somewhere in the zeroes.
